Hans Dominik (1870-1910) war ein deutscher Offizier der Kaiserlichen Schutztruppe für Kamerun und langjähriger Leiter der Station Jaunde. Er war Adjudant der sogenannten „Schutztruppe“ in Kamerun, die den Widerstand der einheimischen Bevölkerung brechen sollte. Als leitender Offizier warb er für die Kaiserliche Schutztruppe gezielt sudanesische Söldner an und setzte kompromisslos die deutsche Herrschaft in Kamerun durch. Verschiedene Kriegszüge zur Befriedung der damaligen Kolonie, führten ihn in bis dahin unbekannte Gebiete, so betrat er als erster Europäer Tibati und durch ihn erhielt man erstmals Aufschluß über das Gebiet zwischen Ngila und Ngaundere. Dominiks Bedeutung für die "Befriedung" der Kolonie und sein Status als dienstältester Offizier in Kamerun sowie seine Fähigkeit zur Selbstdarstellung - er veröffentlichte über seine Tätigkeit in Kamerun zwei Bücher mit apologetischem Tenor, die weite Verbreitung fanden - ließen eine Art Dominik-Mythos entstehen. Seine beiden Publikationen sind heute eine wertvolle Quelle für Informationen über die Geschichte Kameruns und seiner Bevölkerung. Es soll kein "wissenschaftliches Buch" sein, sondern zum einen, ein Gedenken an die Taten und Erlebnisse gefallener Kameraden und zum anderen, soll es die "Länder und Menschen in ihrer Ursprünglichkeit und unberührt von der gleichmachenden Kultur" beschreiben. Dominik berichtet präzise und detailliert über seine verschiedenen Feldzüge zur Unterwerfung einheimischer Stämme und Völker, Operationen, die aus heutiger Perspektive als besonders kontrovers gelten. Das äusserst informative Werk ist ein lehrreiches Zeitdokument aus der kolonialen Vergangenheit Deutschlands, berichtet aus dem Blickwinkel eines überzeugten Nationalisten und sich selbst überschätzenden Mannes. Sorgfältig bearbeiteter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1908, in Frakturschrift.

This volume is the first of its kind to offer a detailed, monographic treatment of Semitic genealogical classification. The introduction describes the author's methodological framework and surveys the history of the subgrouping discussion in Semitic linguistics, and the first chapter provides a detailed description of the proto-Semitic basic vocabulary. Each of its seven main chapters deals with one of the key issues of the Semitic subgrouping debate: the East/West dichotomy, the Central Semitic hypothesis, the North West Semitic subgroup, the Canaanite affiliation of Ugaritic, the historical unity of Aramaic, and the diagnostic features of Ethiopian Semitic and of Modern South Arabian. The book aims at a balanced account of all evidence pertinent to the subgrouping discussion, but its main focus is on the diagnostic lexical features, heavily neglected in the majority of earlier studies dealing with this subject. The author tries to assess the subgrouping potential of the vocabulary using various methods of its diachronic stratification.
