Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Geschichte Deutschlands - 1848, Kaiserreich, Imperialismus, Note: 1,0, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main (Historisches Seminar), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Der Hererokrieg 1904 – 1907 gilt als eines der dunkelsten Kapitel deutscher Kolonialgeschichte. Er besitzt eine Sonderstellung im deutschen Imperialismus und zeichnet sich durch enorme Grausamkeit aus. Die Wahl der militärischen Mittel des damaligen Kommandanten der Kaiserlichen Schutztruppe, Lothar von Trotha, verfolgte nicht alleine das Ziel der Niederschlagung eines Aufstandes, sondern beabsichtigte darüber hinaus die Vernichtung eines ganzen Volkes. Die in den letzten Jahren verstärkt geführten Forschungskontroversen um einen Genozid in Deutschsüdwestafrika und einen angeblich kolonialen Charakter des nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungskrieges in Osteuropa sollen Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sein. Inwiefern handelte es sich bei dem Kolonialkrieg zwischen den Herero und dem Deutschen Reich um einen Genozid und inwieweit kann von einer Kontinuität, den Zweiten Weltkrieg betreffend, gesprochen werden? Desweiteren sollen Verbindungen zwischen beiden Phänomenen der Massengewalt untersucht und beurteilt werden. Im Folgenden wird zunächst der Weg in den Krieg sowie der Kriegsablauf in Kürze dargestellt, wobei die Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Kommandanten der Kaiserlichen Schutztruppe in Deutschsüdwestafrika, Leutwein und Trotha sowie der Kriegsausbruch skizziert werden. Schließlich sollen das Für und Wider einer möglichen Kontinuität des Deutschen Genozids in Deutsch- Südwestafrika und Deutschland im Nationalsozialismus betrachtet werden. Der Forschungsstand bezüglich des Hererokrieges ist mittlerweile breit gefächert. Zu den frühen Werken gehört Horst Drechslers Habilitationsschrift aus dem Jahr 1966 , gefolgt von Helmut Bleys umfangreicher Darstellung , der als erster eine Verbindung zwischen der deutschen Kolonialgeschichte und dem Nationalsozialismus erkennen möchte und somit die These Hannah Arendts aufgreift. Arendt hatte mit ihrem 1955 erschienenen Werk „Elemente und Ursprünge totaler Herrschaft“ den Imperialismus neben dem Antisemitismus als eine Wurzel des Nationalsozialismus ausgemacht. In der imperialen Erfahrung seien schon Methoden entwickelt worden, die später zentrale Elemente totalitärer Herrschaft im Nationalsozialismus ausmachen sollten.

The thousands uprooted and displaced by the Holocaust had a profound cultural impact on the countries in which they sought refuge, with numerous Holocaust escapees attaining prominence as scientists, writers, filmmakers and artists. But what is less well known is the way in which this refugee diaspora shaped the scholarly culture of their new-found homes and international policy. In this unique work, David Simon explores the pioneering role played by mostly Jewish refugee scholars in the creation of development studies and practice following the Second World War, and what we can learn about the discipline by examining the social and intellectual history of its early practitioners. Through in-depth interviews with key figures and their relatives, Simon considers how the escapees' experiences impacted their scholarship, showing how they played a key role in shaping their belief that 'development' really did hold the potential to make a better world, free from the horrors of war, genocide and discrimination they had experienced under Nazi rule. In the process, he casts valuable new light on the origins and evolution of development studies, policy and practice from this formative postwar period to the present.

With the end of the First World War, Germany became a "post-colonial" power. The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 transformed Germany's overseas colonies in Africa and the Pacific into League of Nations Mandates, administered by other powers. Yet a number of Germans rejected this "post-colonial" status, arguing instead that Germany was simply an interrupted colonial power and would soon reclaim these territories. With the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, irredentism seemed once again on the agenda, and these colonialist advocates actively and loudly promoted their colonial cause in the Third Reich. Examining the domestic activities of these colonialist lobbying organizations, Empire in the Heimat demonstrates the continued place of overseas colonialism in shaping German national identity after the end of formal empire. In the Third Reich, the Deutsche Kolonialgesellschaft and the Reichskolonialbund framed Germans as having a particular aptitude for colonialism and the overseas territories as a German Heimat. As such, they sought to give overseas colonialism renewed meaning for both the present and the future of Nazi Germany. They brought this message to the German public through countless publications, exhibitions, rallies, lectures, photographs, and posters. Their public activities were met with a mix of occasional support, ambivalence, or even outright opposition from some Nazi officials, who privileged the Nazi regime's European territorial goals over colonialists' overseas goals. Colonialists' ability to navigate this obstruction and intervention reveals both the limitations and the spaces available in the public sphere under Nazism for such "special interest" discourses.

During the First World War, Britain was the epicentre of global mass internment and deportation operations. Germans, Austro-Hungarians, Turks, and Bulgarians who had settled in Britain and its overseas territories were deemed to be a potential danger to the realm through their ties with the Central Powers and were classified as 'enemy aliens'. A complex set of wartime legislation imposed limitations on their freedom of movement, expression, and property possession. Approximately 50,000 men and some women experienced the most drastic step of enemy alien control, namely internment behind barbed wire, in many cases for the whole duration of the war and thousands of miles away from the place of arrest. Enemies in the Empire is the first study to analyse British internment operations against civilian 'enemies' during the First World War from an imperial perspective. The narrative takes a three-pronged approach. In addition to a global examination, the volume demonstrates how internment operated on a (proto-) national scale within the three selected case studies of the metropole (Britain), a white dominion (South Africa), and a colony under direct rule (India). Stefan Manz and Panikos Panayi then bring their study to the local level by concentrating on the three camps Knockaloe (Britain), Fort Napier (South Africa), and Ahmednagar (India), allowing for detailed analyses of personal experiences. Although conditions were generally humane, in some cases, suffering occurred. The study argues that the British Empire played a key role in developing civilian internment as a central element of warfare and national security on a global scale.
