[Christoph Blumhardt: Preacher, Politician, Pacifist. A Biography] The Württembergian theologian Cristoph Blumhardt (1842-1919) has been an inspiring preacher, pacifist and politician to this day. As owner of the health resort of Bad Boll he preached the message about God's Kingdom; he was one of the first German theologians to join the Social-Democratic Party and became Württembergian Member of the Parliament. Throughout his entire life he referred to war as a sin, especially during the First World War. His spirituality as well as his engagement for the liberation movements in his day, for another way of mission and also for strengthening the international relations are still relevant until today. For the first time his lifework will be honored by a comprehensive biography. The basis of this biography are documents from the family archive that had been inaccessible until now.

Mit Beiträgen von: Peter Herde, Günter Vogler, Eberhard Kolb, Helmut Bley, Wolfgang Schieder, Arnold Esch, Hartmut Lehmann, Hartmut Zwahr, Norbert Angermann, Wolfgang Reinhard, Alexander Demandt, Jörn Rüsen, Christoph Kleßmann, Heinrich August Winkler, Adelheid von Saldern, Hans Medick, Horst Pietschmann, Werner Eck, Hartmut Kaelble, Jürgen Kocka, Wolfgang Benz, Reinhard Spree, Heinz Reif, Dietrich Beyrau, Heinz Schilling, Gisela Bock, Winfried Schulze, Werner Paravicini

In his evocative debut novel, Light on a Part of the Field, Kevin Holowack introduces us to a family grappling with artistic ambition, mental illness, and rifts that may not be possible to mend. Set in B.C. and Alberta in the 1960s and 1970s, this is a novel of finely observed vignettes offering a refracted look at art and family in the Canadian West. A young artist, Ruth, and her obsessive husband are struck by lightning, an experience that throws their lives into a universe of intense beauty and angst. Years later, Ruth lives on a farm her husband bought before his mysterious disappearance, and she creates idyllic but unremarkable paintings to cope with her confusion and loss. Then, without warning, her eldest daughter Gayle is love-struck by a travelling stranger and runs off to Edmonton where she too must contend with poverty, sickness, and her father's upsetting legacy. Meanwhile, farm-bound Ruth becomes more frantic in her work and begins longing for human contact as her house and animals disintegrate around her. As Gayle and Ruth seek new ways of connecting in order to remedy their unsettling family legacy, they begin a complicated process of renewal and must decide whether they can reconcile despite all the pain they have caused one another.

Challenges To Academic Freedom written by Joseph C. Hermanowicz and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-23 with Education categories.

A must-read collection on contemporary threats to academic freedom. Academic freedom may be threatened like never before. Yet confusion endures about what professors have a defensible right to say or publish, particularly in extramural forums like social media. At least one source of the confusion in the United States is the way in which academic freedom is often intertwined with a constitutional freedom of speech. Though related, the freedoms are distinct. In Challenges to Academic Freedom, Joseph C. Hermanowicz argues that, contrary to many historical views, academic freedom is not static. Rather, we may view academic freedom as a set of relational practices that change over time and place. Bringing together scholars from a wide range of fields, this volume examines the current conditions, as well as recent developments, of academic freedom in the United States. • the sources of recurring threat to academic freedom; • administrative interference and overreach; • the effects of administrative law on academic work, carried out under the auspices of Title IX legislation, diversity and inclusion offices, research misconduct tribunals, and institutional review boards; • the tenuous tie between academic freedom and the law, and what to do about it; • the highly contested arena of extramural speech and social media; and • academic freedom in a contingent academy. Adopting varied epistemological bases to engage their subject matter, the contributors demonstrate perspectives that are, by turn, case study analyses, historical, legal-analytic, formal-empirical, and policy oriented. Traversing such conceptual range, Challenges to Academic Freedom demonstrates the imperative of academic freedom to producing outstanding scholarly work amid the concept's entanglements in the twenty-first century. ***2015 National Jewish Book Award Winner*** In this powerful and timely book, one of the most admired and authoritative religious leaders of our time tackles the phenomenon of religious extremism and violence committed in the name of God. If religion is perceived as being part of the problem, Rabbi Sacks argues, then it must also form part of the solution. When religion becomes a zero-sum conceit—that is, my religion is the only right path to God, therefore your religion is by definition wrong—and individuals are motivated by what Rabbi Sacks calls “altruistic evil,” violence between peoples of different beliefs appears to be the only natural outcome. But through an exploration of the roots of violence and its relationship to religion, and employing groundbreaking biblical analysis and interpretation, Rabbi Sacks shows that religiously inspired violence has as its source misreadings of biblical texts at the heart of all three Abrahamic faiths. By looking anew at the book of Genesis, with its foundational stories of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Rabbi Sacks offers a radical rereading of many of the Bible’s seminal stories of sibling rivalry: Cain and Abel, Isaac and Ishmael, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers, Rachel and Leah. “Abraham himself,” writes Rabbi Sacks, “sought to be a blessing to others regardless of their faith. That idea, ignored for many of the intervening centuries, remains the simplest definition of Abrahamic faith. It is not our task to conquer or convert the world or enforce uniformity of belief. It is our task to be a blessing to the world. The use of religion for political ends is not righteousness but idolatry . . . To invoke God to justify violence against the innocent is not an act of sanctity but of sacrilege.” Here is an eloquent call for people of goodwill from all faiths and none to stand together, confront the religious extremism that threatens to destroy us, and declare: Not in God’s Name.

Divine Hospitality written by Fadi Daou and has been published by World Council of Churches this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Christianity and other religions categories.

In face of unprecedented awareness of religious diversity, as well as the dangers of conflict, interreligious dialogue has become vital. Yet, these authors maintain, it is the commitment to think together about religious faith and our inherited traditions that genuinely moves mutual understanding to new levels. Here is such a religious experiment, an interreligious theological quest, framed in the interests of peacemaking. Fadi Daou and Nayla Tabbara, a Maronite priest and a Muslim Sunni, respectively, share one objective: to show what the Christian and Muslim faiths teach with regard to religious "otherness" and to indicate the relationship which may link the believer of another religion to God. It is this honest attempt to find divine hospitality that opens each religion to spiritual solidarity and to the reality, presence, and gift of the other. *** "This is truly an exceptional book. Fadi Daou and Nayla Tabbara have shown that the teaching of theology is not enough, and that . . . it is necessary to promote spiritual communion between believers from different religions and to translate theological questions into terms of daily life." --Jean-Marc Aveline, Institut Catholique de la Mediterranee[Subject: Religious Studies, Muslim Studies, Christian Studies]
