Excerpt from Vorlesungen Über Theorie der Wärme Zur Verfügung standen dem Herausgeber zunachst das Notiz buch des Meisters vom Sommer 1890 und die stenographische Nach schrift (siehe Vorrede zu Band V) vom Sommer 1898; dann noch Hefte, die er selbst als Zuhörer zu Anfang der achtziger Jahre mitgeschrieben und ausgearbeitet hatte, und zwar von der fünf stündigen winter-vorlesung "einführung in die theoretische Physik, in welcher der Wärmetheorie ein erheblicher Raum gewährt wurde. In verschiedenen Semestern, ja sogar in verschiedenen Stunden des selben Semesters pflegte helmholtz verschiedene Betrachtungsweisen derselben Frage zu bringen; jede originell; wenn es nicht zweck mäfsig schien, den Zusammenhang der einen Darstellungsweise durch eine andere zu unterbrechen, ist letztere in kleinerem Druck eingeschoben, was auch mit manchen gelegentlichen vom Hauptwege abzweigenden Abstechern geschehen ist. Vielfach lagen für die Be arbeitung nur Andeutungen vor; wo solche aber in einigermafsen bestimmter Form ausgesprochen waren, sind sie stets verfolgt und ausgeführt worden. Sprach doch auch helmholtz selbst wieder holt bei solchen Andeutungen sein Bedauern über die Knappheit der ihm zur Verfügung stehenden Zeit aus. In ganz besonderem Mafse gilt das für die Entwickelung des Begriffs der freien Energie und seine Anwendungen, unter ihnen eine vollständige Theorie der Lösungen.
