Gössmann lassen sich die vielen Erörterungen des in Hartmanns „Gregorius“ enthaltenen Schuldproblems in vier Gruppen einteilen. Die erste Gruppe umfasst die theologisierenden Interpretationen, welche den literarischen Text als zweitrangig einstufen, indem sie ihn als Propagandamittel für zeitgenössische theologische Anschauungen werten. Sie konstruieren eine persönliche Schuld des Gregorius; eine Schuld, die dessen 17-jährige Buße auf dem „wilden Felsen" begründet. Zur zweiten Gruppe zählen die literaturwissenschaftlich orientierten Arbeiten, die theologische Argumentationen beinhalten. Diese Interpretationen berücksichtigen die Eigengesetzlichkeit des Literarischen und suchen zu erforschen, inwieweit der theologisch-geistliche Hintergrund in die Dichtung eingegangen ist. Sie lehnen die Annahme der persönlichen Schuld des Gregorius ab. Als dritte Gruppe sind die komparativistisch angelegten Interpretationen zu nennen. Sie untersuchen den stoffgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang von Hartmanns „Gregorius“ mit dem antiken Ödipus-Motiv oder mit anderen Legenden des Mittelalters und verwerfen die These der persönlichen Schuld. Der letzten Gruppe lassen sich die sozialgeschichtlich orientierten Arbeiten zurechnen. Die vorliegende Arbeit orientiert sich weitestgehend an den theologisierenden Interpretationen und sucht drei entscheidende Fragen zu beantworten: 1. Ist Gregorius bereits durch seine Geburt mit einer Schuld behaftet oder hat diese für ihn irgendwelche unheilvollen Konsequenzen? 2. Sind Gregorius und seine Mutter durch ihre Ehe, die unbewusste Blutschande, schuldig geworden? 3. Falls die ersten beiden Fragen zu verneinen sind, ist Folgendes zu erörtern: Um welch sonderliche Gnade Gottes handelt es sich, durch die Gregorius nach siebzehnjähriger Bußzeit seine subjektiv nicht vorhandene Schuld endlich vergeben wird?

Unschuld Gregorius am Inzestvergehen mit seiner Mutter spaltet die Germanistische Mediävistik seit Jahrzehnten in zwei Lager . Kann ein Kind, das einer inzestuösen Beziehung entstammt, sein Leben lang mit der Sünde der Eltern belegt werden? Ist jemand anklagbar, wenn er, ohne es zu wissen seine eigenen Mutter ehelicht, die ihn vor Jahren als neugeborenes Kind in eine Barke gelegt und aufs Meer geschickt hat? Zwei Forschungsmeinungen sind zentral: Die eine Forschergruppe sieht im Vollzug des Inzest mit der eigenen Mutter „Delikt Charakter , spricht Gregorius aber dennoch höchstens eine objektive Schuld zu ., während die andere Gruppe im Vorfeld des Inzest zwischen Mutter und Sohn eine Schuld Gregorius‘ ausmachen möchte. Jede Seite führt scheinbar handfeste Argumente für oder gegen eine Schuld des Gregorius an. Und obgleich jede Gruppe mit treffenden Argumenten arbeitet, scheint eine befriedigende Lösung des Problems zunächst unmöglich. Dabei kann bei genauerer Lektüre des Werkes und in Beachtung des Prologs, sowie der vom Erzähler gegebenen Kommentare eine angemessen Lösung des Problems gefunden werden. Hartmann lässt die Rezipienten des Textes mit der komplexen Geschichte des ‚Heiligen‛ nicht allein. Eine wichtige Rolle für die Interpretation des Gregorius nimmt die Tafel ein, die Gregorius‛ Mutter ihrem Sohn mit auf den Weg gegeben hat. Im Folgenden soll versucht werden, durch eine genaue Textanalyse und unter zu Hilfenahme einschlägiger Forschung die Schuldfrage dahingehend zu modifizieren, dass von dem Tatbestand einer Schuld des Protagonisten abzurücken ist.
