An experimental investigation of the flow field in the pancake region of a three-dimensional axisymmetric vortex rate sensor was conducted. Basically the device consists of two coaxial cylindrical surfaces with outlet tubes located on the axis of symmetry perpendicular to the surfaces. Radial inflow of the fluid develops into a sink flow with a vortex generated by an angular rate input through fluid coupling at the periphery of the device. Detailed descriptions of radial and circumferential velocity profiles over a specific range of operating parameters are presented. Hot wire anemometry techniques were utilized to measure the velocity profiles. Experimental results indicate that for gap distances between the coaxial plates greater than 0.25 inches and an inlet radius of 11 inches, the vortex flow throughout is essentially inviscid with boundary layer development along the walls. For gap distances of 0.1 inches or less, fully developed flow occurs near the inlet of the pancake region for pure radial flow. The velocity profiles exhibit a parabolic distribution for pure-radial flow. (Author).

A study was made of charged particle motion in a free-vortex flow field to determine the parameters affecting particle motion and to determine the extent to which applied electric fields can influence the particle motion. Four different cases were investigated. These included first, the analysis of the motion of an uncharged particle in a free-vortex; second, analysis of the motion of a charged particle in a viscous medium under the influence of an applied electrostatic field; third, analysis of charged particle motion in a free-vortex under the influence of the applied electrostatic field, assuming the particle is first positively and then negatively charged; and fourth, analysis of the motion of two charged particles in a free-vortex, accounting for field effects due to particle charge. Fluid Vortices is a comprehensive, up-to-date, research-level overview covering all salient flows in which fluid vortices play a significant role. The various chapters have been written by specialists from North America, Europe and Asia, making for unsurpassed depth and breadth of coverage. Topics addressed include fundamental vortex flows (mixing layer vortices, vortex rings, wake vortices, vortex stability, etc.), industrial and environmental vortex flows (aero-propulsion system vortices, vortex-structure interaction, atmospheric vortices, computational methods with vortices, etc.), and multiphase vortex flows (free-surface effects, vortex cavitation, and bubble and particle interactions with vortices). The book can also be recommended as an advanced graduate-level supplementary textbook. The first nine chapters of the book are suitable for a one-term course; chapters 10--19 form the basis for a second one-term course.

A low-speed wind-tunnel study of the flow about a 76/40-deg double-delta wing is described for angles of attack ranging from -10 to 25 deg and Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 Million. The study was conducted to provide data for the purpose of understanding the vortical flow behavior and for validating Computational Fluid Dynamics methods. Flow visualization tests have provided insight into the effect of the angle of attack and Reynolds number of the vortex-dominated flow both on and off of the surface of the double-delta wing. Upper surface pressure recordings from pressure orifices and Pressure Sensitive Paint have provided data on the pressures induced by the vortices. Flowfield surveys were carried out at an angle of attack of 10 deg by using a thin 5-hole probe. Numerical solutions of the compressible thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations were conducted and compared to the experimental data. Verhaagen, N. G. and Jenkins, L. N. and Kern, S. B. and Washburn, A. An Analytical Study Of A Confined Viscous Vortex written by David Edward Crow and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1972 with Boundary layer categories.

"A composite solution for the flow field of a three dimensional, incompressible laminar, viscous vortex confined inside a conical converging nozzle is presented. This model is used to study the strong mainstream boundary layer interaction that occurs in confined vortex flows. The confined vortex flow field is divided into mainstream and boundary layer regions. A particular class of solutions of the general equations of motion is used to represent the vortex flow in the mainstream region. That is, the tangential velocity in the mainstream region is assumed to be of the form W = T(e)/R. Velocity and pressure profiles from the mainstream region are used as boundary conditions to generate an integral momentum solution in the boundary layer region. The mainstream boundary layer interaction is modeled by iteratively matching the transverse velocity at the common edge of the two regions, while conserving the mass flow and radial momentum of the total system at all points along the length of the nozzle. The results for the velocity profiles and the boundary layer growth obtained by separately considering each region of the flow field are presented and discussed. The velocity and pressure profiles obtained from the composite solution are compared with experimental data from previous investigations"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Many important phenomena in fluid motion are evident in vortex flow, i.e., flows in which vortical structures are significant in determining the whole flow. This book, which consists of lectures given at a NATO ARW held in Grenoble (France) in June 1992, provides an up-to-date account of current research in the study of these phenomena by means of numerical methods and mathematical modelling. Such methods include Eulerian methods (finite difference, spectral and wavelet methods) as well as Lagrangian methods (contour dynamics, vortex methods) and are used to study such topics as 2- or 3-dimensional turbulence, vorticity generation by solid bodies, shear layers and vortex sheets, and vortex reconnection. For researchers and graduate students in computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and applied mathematics.

Studies Of Vortex Dominated Flows written by M. Yousuff Hussaini and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Fluid dynamics categories.

From the astrophysical scale of a swirling spiral galaxy, through the geophysical scale of a hurricane, down to the subatomic scale of elementary particles, vortical motion and vortex dynamics have played a profound role in our understanding of the physical world. Kuchemann referred to vortex dynamics as "the sinews and muscles of fluid motion. " In order to update our understanding of vortex dominated flows, NASA Langley Research Center and the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) conducted a workshop during July 9-11, 1985. The subject was broadly divided into five overlapping topics vortex dynamics, vortex breakdown, massive separation, vortex shedding from sharp leading edges and conically separated flows. Some of the experts in each of these areas were invited to provide an overview of the subject. This volume is the proceedings of the workshop and contains the latest, theoretical, numerical, and experimental work in the above-mentioned areas. Leibovich, Widnall, Moore and Sirovich discussed topics on the fundamentals of vortex dynamics, while Keller and Hafez treated the problem of vortex break down phenomena; the contributions of Smith, Davis and LeBalleur were in the area of massive separation and inviscid-viscous interactions, while those of Cheng, Hoeijmakers and Munnan dealt with sharp-leading-edge vortex flows; and Fiddes and Marconi represented the category of conical separated flows.
