A historia dun neno que pretende acadar a intelixencia e a dos personaxes peculiares e imprevisibles que o rodean fan que en Vredaman o humor e a sorpresa se combinan nun relato no que imaxinación e pensamento crítico van parellos. O título da novela é a mestura do nome dun dos personaxes de As I lay Dying de William Faulkner, un neno chamado Vardaman, e do nome do pintor holandés Vredeman de Brie, que tivo un fillo que nunca pintou un cadro orixinal, senón que o único que fixo foi copiar os do seu pai. Unai Elorriaga relata nesta novela a historia de Tomé, un neno que persegue a intelixencia e como, para conseguilo, ten que chegar a aceptar a existencia da morte. A carón do protagonista, xorden as historias dos membros da súa familia e dos seus amigos: dun avó ebanista que se burla da hipocrisía e da necesidade de aparentar, un tío que quere recuperar o espírito comunal do deporte, unha muller que tivo un mozo durante corenta anos, pero nunca chegou a casar con el e unha tía que anda na procura dun exemplar rarísimo de cabalo do demo azul. A novela ten moito de xogo, pero máis alá do lúdico os lectores e lectoras han gozar coa súa lúcida reflexión sobre os seres humanos. Un relato perfecto que medra en emoción a medida que se aproxima ao final. Vredaman fala, entre outras moitas cousas, sobre a estraña relación entre intelixencia e morte, pero non o fai dun xeito seco e abstracto, senón a través de historias concretas e conmovedoras. Elorriaga, tamén nos fala da interesada utilización de palabras como " triunfador" ou "perdedor"; fálanos desas razóns que, malia non teren sentido, cambian a vida dos seres humanos, case sen que se decaten e, fálanos tamén, dos que pretenden dicir como temos que pensar.

Unai Elorriaga crea nesta novela un universo narrativo propio e fascinante que cativa ao lector pola maxia dunha prosa que consegue superar as barreiras da novela convencional.
