Basic Czech I written by Ana Adamovicova and has been published by Karolinum Press, Charles University this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-15 with Czech language categories.

Basic Czech I is a modern textbook of Czech for English-speaking students. It consists of six modules and is based on communication and the comparative approach. It aims to present the basics of the Czech language by means of continuous and systematic acquisition of vocabulary and conversation phrases connected with covered topics: social phrases, around the city and house, restaurant, hobbies, shopping and travelling. Grammar, closely linked to the vocabulary, is a mere means of achieving this goal. Clear charts help the user to remember the covered topics easily. The use of the mediating language is reduced to a minimum; it fulfils the role of an apt explanation. The textbook contains many humorous dialogues. Basic Czech I corresponds with the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The aim of this textbook of Czech for foreigners is to provide a brief introduction to the fundamentals of the language. The book contains six modules; while the first focuses on the Czech alphabet and pronunciation, the remaining chapters always present a common topic which serves as a basis for language practice. The book contains more than 700 words and phrases.

Romania, the last months of the dictator's regime. Adina is a young schoolteacher. Paul is a musician. Clara, Adina's friend, works in a wire factory. Pavel is Clara's lover. But one of them works for the secret police and is reporting on the group. One day Adina returns home to discover that her fox fur rug has had its tail cut off. On another day, a hindleg. Then a foreleg. The mutilation is a sign that she is being tracked - the fox was ever the hunter. Images of photographic precision combine to form a kaleidoscope of reflections, deflections and deceit. Adina and her friends struggle to keep living in a world permeated with fear, where even the eyes of a cat seem complicit with the watchful eye of the state, and where it's hard to tell the victim apart from the perpetrator.

Animal Beauty written by Christiane Nusslein-Volhard and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-14 with Science categories.

An illustrated exploration of colors and patterns in the animal kingdom, what they communicate, and how they function in the social life of animals. Are animals able to appreciate what humans refer to as “beauty”? The term scarcely ever appears nowadays in a scientific description of living things, but we humans may nonetheless find the colors, patterns, and songs of animals to be beautiful in apparently the same way that we see beauty in works of art. In Animal Beauty, Nobel Prize–winning biologist Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard describes how the colors and patterns displayed by animals arise, what they communicate, and how they function in the social life of animals. Watercolor drawings illustrate these amazing instances of animal beauty. Darwin addressed the topic of ornament in his 1871 book The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, and did not hesitate to engage with criteria of beauty, convinced that animals experienced color and ornament as attractive and agreeable in the same way that we do, and that the role this played in mate choice pointed to a “sexual selection” distinct from natural selection. Nüsslein-Volhard examines key examples of ornament and sexual selection in the animal kingdom and lays the groundwork for biological aesthetics. Noting that color patterns have not been a research priority—perhaps because they appeared to be nonessential luxuries rather than functional necessities—Nüsslein-Volhard looks at recent scientific developments on the topic. In part because of Nüsslein-Volhard's own research on the zebrafish, it is now possible to decipher the molecular genetic mechanisms that lead to production of colors in animal skin and its appendages and control its pattern and distribution.

Dissatisfied with the large works in steel he had hitherto produced, in this volume (first published by TVRT in 1972) Peter Downsbrough (born 1940) set out the groundwork for what would become a minimal vocabulary, in his sculptures as in his books: the tension between two parallel lines, often coupled with isolated words, divided internally.
