The United States is increasingly dependent on information and information technology for both civilian and military purposes, as are many other nations. Although there is a substantial literature on the potential impact of a cyberattack on the societal infrastructure of the United States, little has been written about the use of cyberattack as an instrument of U.S. policy. Cyberattacks-actions intended to damage adversary computer systems or networks-can be used for a variety of military purposes. But they also have application to certain missions of the intelligence community, such as covert action. They may be useful for certain domestic law enforcement purposes, and some analysts believe that they might be useful for certain private sector entities who are themselves under cyberattack. This report considers all of these applications from an integrated perspective that ties together technology, policy, legal, and ethical issues. Focusing on the use of cyberattack as an instrument of U.S. national policy, Technology, Policy, Law and Ethics Regarding U.S. Acquisition and Use of Cyberattack Capabilities explores important characteristics of cyberattack. It describes the current international and domestic legal structure as it might apply to cyberattack, and considers analogies to other domains of conflict to develop relevant insights. Of special interest to the military, intelligence, law enforcement, and homeland security communities, this report is also an essential point of departure for nongovernmental researchers interested in this rarely discussed topic.

Sinclair Lewis's "Kingsblood Royal" is a powerful exploration of race and identity set in the early 20th century American Midwest. The novel follows the life of Neil Kingsblood, a white man who discovers that he has African ancestry. This revelation compels him to confront the entrenched racism of his community and his own prejudices, ultimately leading to a profound personal transformation. Lewis employs a satirical yet poignant literary style, deftly blending realism with biting social commentary that interrogates the constructs of race and privilege in American society. The narrative reflects the cultural tensions of its time, encapsulating the struggle between individual identity and societal expectations in an era grappling with the implications of race relations. Sinclair Lewis, an award-winning novelist and the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, often drew from his own experiences growing up in a small town. His prior works, such as "Main Street" and "Babbitt," set the stage for the themes of conformity and social critique that permeate "Kingsblood Royal." Lewis's insightful observations of American life and culture, coupled with his passion for social justice, illuminate the urgent issues presented in the novel. "Kingsblood Royal" is a compelling read for anyone interested in the intersection of race, identity, and societal norms. Lewis's incisive prose and rich character development invite readers to question their own beliefs while providing a mirror to the complex realities of race in America. This novel remains a vital contribution to the ongoing discourse surrounding race relations and its relevance continues to resonate today.

What holds Indonesia together? 'A strong leader' is the answer most often given. This book looks instead at a middle level of society. Middle classes in provincial towns around the vast archipelago mediate between the state and society and help to constitute state power. 'Middle Indonesia' is a social zone connecting extremes. The Making of Middle Indonesia examines the rise of an indigenous middle class in one provincial town far removed from the capital city. Spanning the late colonial to early New Order periods, it develops an unusual, associational notion of political power. 'Soft' modalities of power included non-elite provincial people in the emerging Indonesian state. At the same time, growing inequalities produced class tensions that exploded in violence in 1965-1966.

A collection of Jackson's letters from prison, Soledad Brother is an outspoken condemnation of the racism of white America and a powerful appraisal of the prison system that failed to break his spirit but eventually took his life. Jackson's letters make palpable the intense feelings of anger and rebellion that filled black men in America's prisons in the 1960s. But even removed from the social and political firestorms of the 1960s, Jackson's story still resonates for its portrait of a man taking a stand even while locked down.

Is there an option to oppose without automatically participating in the opposed? This volume explores different perspectives on dissent, understanding practices, cultures, and theories of resistance, dispute, and opposition as inherently participative. It discusses aspects of the body as a political instance, the identity and subjectivity building of individuals and groups, (micro-)practices of dissent, and theories of critique from different disciplinary perspectives. This collection thus touches upon contemporary issues, recent protests and movements, artistic subversion and dissent, online activism as well as historic developments and elemental theories of dissent.

Physician-scientists are unusual creatures. While we are drawn to the clinical challenges of our patients, we are also drawn to the opportunities that our patients’ medical problems bring to science. This book contains the unique experiences and encounters that drew 20 accomplished physician-scientists to this profession. These personal stories are those of people and circumstances that have had profound effects on our career decisions, our creative opportunities, and our lives. These stories also serve to highlight the lessons learned along the way and the distinct attributes of these women and men of medicine and science. Our combined hope is that our collective biographies will enhance the public understanding of our profession, will move people from medicine to science and from science to medicine, and will inspire those who are contemplating this extraordinary profession. “It is a rare gift to benefit from the collective wisdom of so many individuals at the same time. These physician scientists have provided readers with helpful advice and thoughtful encouragement. The interesting and thought provoking essays in Medicine Science and Dreams can be read and digested one at a time or all at once in sequence. They provide lessons to be learned by any physician-scientist, whether just starting out or in the middle of a research career. Schwartz has done readers a great service and has added to the legacy of these prominent and successful physician-scientists.” Book review in JAMA, September 7, 2011—Vol 306, No. 9 by Derek S. Wheeler, MD
