The imminent exhaustion of the first printing of this monograph and the kind willingness of the publishers have presented me with the opportunity to correct a few minor misprints and to make a number of additions to the first edition. Some of these additions are in the form of remarks scattered throughout the monograph. The principal additions are Chapter 11, most of Section 6. 6 (inc1uding Theorem 6. 6. 2), Sections 6. 7, 7. 7, and 4. 9. It has been impossible to inc1ude all the novel and inter℗Ư esting results which have appeared in the last three years. I hope to inc1ude these in a new edition or a new monograph, to be written in a few years when the main new currents of research are more clearly visible. There are now several instances where, in the first edition, only a weak converse was proved, and, in the present edition, the proof of a strong converse is given. Where the proof of the weaker theorem em℗Ư ploys a method of general application and interest it has been retained and is given along with the proof of the stronger result. This is wholly in accord with the purpose of the present monograph, which is not only to prove the principal coding theorems but also, while doing so, to acquaint the reader with the most fruitful and interesting ideas and methods used in the theory. Die Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie ist ein relativ junges Teilgebiet der Mathematik, das eigentlich erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten durch die Verwendung maBtheoretischer Begriffsbildungen eine befriedigende For mulierung gefunden hat. So darf man den Beginn der modernen Wahr scheinlichkeitsrechnung wohl urn die Zeit des 1933 erschienenen Heftes "Grundbegriffe der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung" von A. KOLMOGOROFF in der Reihe "Ergebnisse der Mathematik und ihrer Grenzgebiete" an setzen. Seitdemhat man nicht nur gelernt, die verschiedenen klassischen Ergebnisse von einem einheitlichen Gesichtspunkt aus zu verstehen; sondern viele Probleme konnten uberhaupt erst durch die Verwendung der maBtheoretischen Hilfsmittel in der erforderlichen Allgemeinheit formuliert und behandelt werden. Ich denke hier vor allem an die Theorie der stochastischen Prozesse, an die Spieltheorie und an die Theorie der statistischen Entscheidungsverfahren. Die im deutsch sprachigen Schrifttum vorliegenden Lehrbucher der Wahrscheinlich keitsrechnung sind, abgesehen von einigen kleineren Einfiihrungen in die klassische Theorie, vor dem Beginn der neuen Entwicklung verfaBt worden. Sie k6nnen daher den heutigen Anspruchen nicht mehr ge nugen. Den Studenten und auch den Dozenten ist es damit sehr schwer gemacht, den Vorsprung wieder einzuholen, den die auslandische Wissen schaft in der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und in ihren Anwendungs gebieten gerade in den entscheidenden Jahren nach 1933 gewonnen hat. Hier liegt also eine Lucke vor, die ich versuchen will, durch dieses Lehr buch etwas auszufullen. Ohne die klassische Theorie zu sehr zu ver nachlassigen, m6chte ich den Leser soweit in die heutige Wahrschein lichkeitstheorie einfuhren, daB er in der Lage ist, auch schwierigere Untersuchungen zu studieren.
