Disrupted Realism is the first book to survey the works of contemporary painters who are challenging and reshaping the tradition of Realism. Helping art lovers, collectors, and artists approach and understand this compelling new phenomenon, it includes the works of 38 artists whose paintings respond to the subjectivity and disruptions of modern experience. Widely published author and blogger John Seed, who believes that we are "the most distracted society in the history of the world," has selected artists he sees as visionaries in this developing movement. The artists' impulses toward disruption are as individual as the artists themselves, but all share the need to include perception and emotion in their artistic process. Six sections lay out and analyze common themes: "Toward Abstraction," "Disrupted Bodies," "Emotions and Identities," "Myths and Visions," "Patterns, Planes, and Formations," and "Between Painting and Photography." Interviews with each artist offer additional insight into some of the most incisive and relevant painting being created today.

Born in Shanghai, and working successively in Paris, New York and Amsterdam, Walasse Ting (1928-2010) forged a unique path in postwar abstract and figurative painting. His early creations were close to those of the CoBrA group (with whom he was friendly), but he eventually developed a style inspired by the language of Chinese painting and the spontaneity of American action painting. Ting connected with many avant-garde movements across the globe, forging ties with Sam Francis, Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol, and his work has become the object of much enthusiasm in recent years. This volume is published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Musée Cernuschi in Paris, which presents more than 80 paintings that Ting donated to the museum. These range from monumental compositions portraying women with botanical bodies to pages from a confession book. This accompanying catalog constitutes the most substantial survey of Ting's explosively energetic art yet published.

Just like the self, sensations and emotions expressed in literature are elusive issues. Necessarily separated from living reality and yet, in a sense, a mirror of it, linguistic coding of bodily feeling and emotional feeling became subject of avid interest among scholars of historical emotion research and the history of mentality in intra- and intercultural perspectives. This volume combines eleven essays with critical discussions concerning the bidirectional network of sense perception and emotion. Exploring the theme from different angles - psychological, medical, and literary - From Skin to Heart highlights the intimate interrelationship between bodily sensations, states of mind, and the emotions from pain, illness, and self-destruction to love-sickness and self-sacrifice in early Chinese poetry and ethics and late imperial lyrics and narrative. The partly descriptive, partly analytical essays are contributions of a new wave of Continental and American sinology that, inspired by cultural studies, discourse analysis, and rhetorical analysis, offers fresh views on body and psyche as locked into and emerging from Chinese primary sources. An appendix provides additional examples of the rich linguistic material referring to phenomena of sense perception and the affective sphere and their interdependence.

A fifth collection of classic Peanuts newspaper comic strips features 248 daily strips from 1955-1958 and feature Snoopy, perhaps Peanuts most popular character, certainly when it comes to cainines! This book is a facsimile edition of the fifth Peanuts collection originally published back in 1958 by the Clarke, Irwin & Company, Ltd of Toronto, Canada. This collection of 248 daily Peanuts newspaper strips that appeared between 1955 -1958 focuses on, perhaps the most famous character in the Peanuts universe, Charlie Brown's Beagle, Snoopy. Whether he's chasing snow flakes, doing impersonations or just dancing his world famous happy jig, things are always going to a little sillier when Snoopy's around. The strip's bitter-sweet humour and child-like innocence helped to cement the Peanuts comic strip's popularity and secure its reputation as a true, one-of-a-kind, timeless classic.
