Henry David Thoreau built his small cabin on Walden Pond in 1845 and, for two years, lived there as simply as possible, eliminating the unnecessary material and spiritual details that intrude upon human happiness. Thoreau described his experiences in Walden, using vivid, forceful prose that transforms his reflections on nature into richly evocative metaphors. This beautiful illustrated edition brings a rarely seen visual dimension to Thoreau's philosophical masterpiece.

Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) was an American naturalist, poet, philosopher, and essayist who played a leading role in the transcendentalist movement. A prolific writer, he produced more than 20 volumes of articles, essays, journals, poetry and books, with his most notable contributions including his work on philosophy and natural history. Arguably his most famous work, “Walden or, Life in the Woods” (1854), it concerns Thoreau's experiences over a period of two years, two months, and two days spent in a cabin near Conrad, Massachusetts. A reflection on simple living in nature, it is partly an exploration of personal freedom, partly a social experiment, and partly a voyage of self-discovery. Highly recommended for fans of nature writing and transcendentalism. Contents include: “Economy”, “Where I Lived, and What I Lived for”, “Reading”, “Sounds”, “Solitude”, “Visitors”, “The Bean-Field”, “The Village”, “The Ponds”, “Baker Farm”, “Higher Laws”, “Brute Neighbors”, “House-Warming”, “Former Inhabitants and Winter Visitors”, etc. Other works by this author include: “The Landlord” (1843), “Sir Walter Raleigh” (1844), and “Herald of Freedom” (1844). A Thousand Fields is republishing this classic book now complete with an Introductory poem by Louisa M. Alcott and a biographical sketch by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Walden (first published in 1854 as Walden; or, Life in the Woods) is a book by American transcendentalist writer Henry David Thoreau. The text is a reflection upon the author's simple living in natural surroundings. The work is part personal declaration of independence, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery, satire, and-to some degree-a manual for self-reliance.[ Walden details Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years, two months, and two days in a cabin he built near Walden Pond amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, near Concord, Massachusetts. Thoreau makes precise scientific observations of nature as well as metaphorical and poetic uses of natural phenomena. He identifies many plants and animals by both their popular and scientific names, records in detail the color and clarity of different bodies of water, precisely dates and describes the freezing and thawing of the pond, and recounts his experiments to measure the depth and shape of the bottom of the supposedly "bottomless" Walden Pond. There has been much speculation as to why Thoreau went to live at the pond in the first place. E. B. White stated on this note, "Henry went forth to battle when he took to the woods, and Walden is the report of a man torn by two powerful and opposing drives-the desire to enjoy the world and the urge to set the world straight", while Leo Marx noted that Thoreau's stay at Walden Pond was an experiment based on his teacher Emerson's "method and of nature" and that it was a "report of an experiment in transcendental pastoralism".
