To ‘walk in Pimlico’ is, according to the Penguin Dictionary of Historical Slang, the colloquial expression 'to be handsomely dressed'. Comedian, clog dancer, comic vocalist, actor and all-round funny fellow Corney Sage is treading the boards at the Constellation in Whitechapel when he stumbles across the body of an actress outside the theatre and catches sight of the killer as he escapes. Corney was not the only witness. Fellow actress Lucy Strong also saw what happened and when the murderer returns to the scene of the crime that same night, both fear for their lives. Corney and Lucy flee London separately, keeping in touch with each other through a series of advertisements in the trade paper, the Era. Certain they have escaped the same fate as Bessie, they settle into their new lives away from London. But the murderer – a master of disguise – is slowly closing in on them and it is only a matter of time before he pounces . . . From the drawing rooms of polite society to the back rooms of brothels, through music halls, circus rings and freak shows, Ann Featherstone brilliantly reconstructs 19th century England in this gripping psychological thriller.

A grey, sunless morning on the Firth of Tay. Across a wide, sandy waste stretching away to the misty sea at Budden, four men were walking. Two wore uniform-one an alert, grey-haired general, sharp and brusque in manner, with many war ribbons across his tunic; the other a tall, thin-faced staff captain, who wore the tartan of the Gordon Highlanders. With them were two civilians, both in rough shooting-jackets and breeches, one about forty-five, the other a few years his junior. "Can you see them, Fellowes?" asked the general of the long-legged captain, scanning the distant horizon with those sharp grey eyes which had carried him safely through many campaigns. "No, sir," replied the captain, who was carrying the other's mackintosh. "I fancy they must be farther over to the left, behind those low mounds yonder." "Haven't brought their battery into position yet, I suppose," snapped the old officer, as he swung along with the two civilians beside him. Fred Tredennick, the taller of the two civilians, walked with a gait decidedly military, for, indeed, he was a retired major, and as the general had made a tour of inspection of the camp prior to walking towards where the mountain battery was man uvring, he had been chatting with him upon technical matters.

The Doctor of Pimlico (1919) is a mystery novel by Anglo-French writer William Le Queux. Published at the height of Le Queux's career as a leading author of popular thrillers, The Doctor of Pimlico is a story of mystery, idolization, and international crime. Using his own research and experience as a journalist and adventurer, Le Queux crafts an accessible, entertaining tale for readers in search of a literary escape. Known for his works of fiction and nonfiction on the possibility of Germany invading Britain--a paranoia common in the early twentieth century--William Le Queux also wrote dozens of thrillers and adventure novels for a dedicated public audience. Although critical acclaim eluded him, popular success made him one of England's bestselling writers. In The Doctor of Pimlico, a writer befriends a retired General whose legendary career consisted of expeditions in Egypt, Afghanistan, Burma, and France. Walter Fetherston, an internationally renowned mystery novelist with a reputation for cosmopolitan excess, meets and immediately falls in love with General Sir Hugh Elcombe's daughter, the beautiful Enid Orlebar. Hoping for marriage, Fetherston has his dreams disrupted when a newcomer to the General's social circle proves to have a strange and nefarious influence on those around him. Dr. Weirmarsh, a surgeon based in London, possesses a hypnotic personality and seems to hold considerable sway over the lives of the General and Enid. Looking for answers, Fetherston uses his skill as a mystery writer to play the part of the detective, traveling across Europe in an effort to uncover the doctor's murky past. What he finds is more shocking, and much more extensive, than he could ever have imagined. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of William Le Queux's The Doctor of Pimlico is a classic mystery novel reimagined for modern readers.

A really great book. I can't put it down' -- ***** Reader review 'Fascinating from start to finish' -- ***** Reader review ************************************************************************************************ From the sources of the Fleet in Hampstead's ponds to the mouth of the Effra in Vauxhall, via the meander of the Westbourne through 'Knight's Bridge' and the Tyburn's curve along Marylebone Lane, London's Lost Rivers unearths the hidden waterways that flow beneath the streets of the capital. Paul Talling investigates how these rivers shaped the city - forming borough boundaries and transport networks, fashionable spas and stagnant slums - and how they all eventually gave way to railways, roads and sewers. Armed with his camera, he traces their routes and reveals their often overlooked remains: riverside pubs on the Old Kent Road, healing wells in King's Cross, 'stink pipes' in Hammersmith and gurgling gutters on streets across the city. Packed with maps and over 100 colour photographs, London's Lost Rivers uncovers the watery history of the city's most famous sights, bringing to life the very different London that lies beneath our feet.
