This “passionate affirmation of the simple life” explores how walking has influenced history’s greatest thinkers—from Henry David Thoreau and John Muir to Gandhi and Nietzsche (Observer) “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” —Nietzsche In this French bestseller, leading thinker and philosopher Frédéric Gros charts the many different ways we get from A to B—the pilgrimage, the promenade, the protest march, the nature ramble—and reveals what they say about us. Gros draws attention to other thinkers who also saw walking as something central to their practice. On his travels he ponders Thoreau’s eager seclusion in Walden Woods; the reason Rimbaud walked in a fury, while Nerval rambled to cure his melancholy. He shows us how Rousseau walked in order to think, while Nietzsche wandered the mountainside to write. In contrast, Kant marched through his hometown every day, exactly at the same hour, to escape the compulsion of thought. Brilliant and erudite, A Philosophy of Walking is an entertaining and insightful manifesto for putting one foot in front of the other.

Author KIMIKO was a full time housewife and mother of two children who at the age of 36 discovered the mental and physical benefits of walking properly. Born and raised in Okayama—a prefecture west of Osaka—she attended an all-girls high school and was later hired by the Tokyo office of a cosmetics company. At the age of 27, she took the recommendations of a customer and met a financially secure man of 32 who was being groomed to take over his family's business. Falling prey to her friends' urgings to "marry a rich man" and her own ideas of equating marriage with stability, she got married soon thereafter. Though her husband was faithful, kind, and hardworking, and she provided office work for the family business, she found her marriage wanting until she realized one day that she "had nothing for herself in her life." She felt her "sense of self slipping away." It was then that she decided to take a walking class. Within two years Kimiko was teaching walking herself, refining the lessons she'd learned in other walking classes and applying life-affirming lessons to her process. Though the basics of proper walking technique and posture are outlined, the extension of spiritual growth and reaffirmation methods from applying them supply the body of the text. Some of the lessons KIMIKO discusses include: Turning on the Positive Switch -- Complimenting yourself throughout the day can elevate your confidence and spirit in everything you do Discovering the Beauty Within You -- Making a list of 100 aspects of your worthiness will help reverse the inner feelings of self-loathing and strengthen self-esteem Make Yourself a High-Class Brand -- Learning and applying the proper posture gained through walking will present an air of confidence and good looks that no amount of brand fashions and make-up can rival How to Be Treated Preciously by Others -- Don't short-change those things to which you treat yourself, otherwise others will shortchange you Walking Effectively to Activate Your Positive Switch -- The simple act of walking properly—head up, weight back, rolling your foot forward heal-to-toe—will cause a spiritual shift

“Our world of war, poverty, corporate greed, racism, sexism, nuclear weapons, and catastrophic climate change demonstrates the total failure of violence,” says John Dear. The internationally known peace activist and Nobel Prize nominee has always offered a single answer: Jesus. Now he invites us to follow the nonviolent Jesus through the holy season of Lent, beginning with Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and culminating in his resurrection and the new life of peace he brings to all. Deeply personal and uncompromisingly committed to peace, these prayerful reflections on Jesus’ life and death challenge the notion that support of violence at any level is compatible with a life in Christ. Drawing on the insights of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and others, Dear shows us how we can practice gospel nonviolence, be apostles of peace, and change the world. Perfect for personal reflection or small group discussion, these meditations invite us to “participate in our own inner disarmament and cultivate our true nonviolent nature” as we follow the Good Shepherd, the Lamb of God. A timely, important, and inspiring book for our times.

In these never-before-published stories, sayings, and biblical teachings, the beloved author and translator of The Message Bible shows us how the wisdom of deep faith helps us live well. “Calming, encouraging, and profound.”—Matt Chandler, lead pastor of The Village Church “Jesus’ words bring us the news of an expanded world, a bright world, a full-dimensioned world, a world in which God rules, mercy is common experience, and love is the daily working agenda.” Eugene H. Peterson (1932–2018) was one of the most beloved authors, pastors, poets, and professors of our time. While millions have read his bestselling paraphrased Bible translation, The Message, far fewer have heard his direct practical insights and wisdom about how to live well. Eugene knew the extraordinary spirituality of ordinary life. He understood that we actually become more, not less, human as we grow to live like Jesus. And living like Jesus means living well. On Living Well collects some of Eugene’s best never-before-published short writings to help you walk in the way of Jesus with a little more courage, passion, and hope—by offering new ways to practice generosity, community, prayer, simplicity, worship, inner peace, and so much more . . . even with the challenges of today. This book is a rich feast for the soul, ideal as a daily spiritual touchpoint or simply to nourish a heart hungry for pastoral wisdom. It is your invitation to enter into the meaningful simplicity of life with Jesus in a world of immense beauty, real difficulty, and endless wonder.
