Walking Together written by Alejandra Díaz de León and has been published by University of Arizona Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-25 with Social Science categories.

Migration through Mexico is violent and uncertain, yet in Walking Together we see how this experience bonds some people together like family even though they may not have started that way before the journey. Migrants in transit form several types of social networks, develop trust, and engage in acts of solidarity. The need to be recognized and grieved, compounded by the practical use of pooling information and resources, leads migrants to form small, strong groups called road families. Through the generalized sharing of information and small items such as food and blankets, migrants also form a transient community that includes everyone on the road at the same time. Sociologist Alejandra Díaz de León shows the trajectories of families that left together, showing, surprisingly, that families might not be the best social arrangement in transit. Drawing on multisited research, this work contributes to debates on the role of social networks in clandestine migration processes and to discussions on how people create social networks and trust under violent and stressful situations. The detailed ethnographic narratives and accessible writing weave together theory with empirical observations to highlight and humanize the migrant experience. Sitting at the intersection of border studies, immigration studies, and Latinx studies, this concise volume shows how Central American migrants in transit through Mexico survive the precarious and unpredictable road by forming different types of social ties.

Pocket Rough Guide Hong Kong Macau written by Rough Guides and has been published by Rough Guides UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-03 with Travel categories.

The Pocket Guide to Hong Kong and Macau celebrates the sheer energy of these two former European colonies, sitting just 60km apart on the south China coast. It includes the lowdown on the incredible shopping opportunities and cutting-edge architecture of Hong Kong's downtown, its parks and harbourside cityscapes, all existing alongside more traditional temples and street markets. Further afield are the under-appreciated beaches, rural landscapes and old walled villages of the New Territories, easy to reach in even a short visit, but often overlooked. Across the Pearl River and close enough for day-trips, Macau's eighteenth-century churches and lanes incongruously rub shoulders with ludicrously ostentatious casinos. This full-colour guide features inspirational photography and detailed, reliable maps that show you the best of the city. There are up-to-the-minute reviews of the region's incredible dining and entertainment opportunities too, from indigenous Macanese cuisine and the best places to greet the day with a traditional dim sum breakfast, to Lan Kwai Fong's bars and old colonial hotels where you can have afternoon tea. The Pocket Rough Guide Hong Kong and Macau is the perfect companion for a city break. Now available in ePub format.

The route which begins and ends in Tweedbank, is described clockwise over 6 stages averaging 11.3 miles per day. Relatively flat, it is suitable for people with a moderate level of fitness. The Way can be walked at any time of year and can be reached within an hour by train from the centre of Edinburgh. This guidebook provides a comprehensive description of the route, which passes through the towns of Melrose, Kelso, Jedburgh, Hawick and Selkirk and the villages of Denholm and Newton St Boswells. In addition to clear route description and OS 1:50,000 mapping extracts, the guidebook also includes information about the history of the Borders abbeys, the ever-intriguing Borders reivers, and the region's geology and agriculture. Invaluable practical information relating to accommodation, transport, mapping and public access is also included.

Migration Miracle written by Jacqueline Maria Hagan and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-10 with Social Science categories.

Since the arrival of the Puritans, various religious groups, including Quakers, Jews, Catholics, and Protestant sects, have migrated to the United States. The role of religion in motivating their migration and shaping their settlement experiences has been well documented. What has not been recorded is the contemporary story of how migrants from Mexico and Central America rely on religionÑtheir clergy, faith, cultural expressions, and everyday religious practicesÑto endure the undocumented journey. At a time when anti-immigrant feeling is rising among the American public and when immigration is often cast in economic or deviant terms, Migration Miracle humanizes the controversy by exploring the harsh realities of the migrantsÕ desperate journeys. Drawing on over 300 interviews with men, women, and children, Jacqueline Hagan focuses on an unexplored dimension of the migration undertakingÑthe role of religion and faith in surviving the journey. Each year hundreds of thousands of migrants risk their lives to cross the border into the United States, yet until now, few scholars have sought migrantsÕ own accounts of their experiences.
