RICHARD LONG The central fact and act of Richard Longs art is walking. His work is founded on the art of walking, the act of walking, the actuality of walking, and on walking as art, as act, as experience. His walks become artwalks, artwalks which become artworks. For Richard Long, (art)walking is (art)working. As he walks he works. Art-walking and art-working become interchangeable. I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks who had a genius, so to speak, for sauntering, wrote Henry Thoreau. Much of Richard Longs art consists of measuring walks, mapping walks, walks and executing walks. Memories of walks, dreams of walks... walks in the past, in history. Later and earlier walks in the same landscapes: Dartmoor, Somerset, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Mexico, India. Real walks, but also artwalks. Walks in imaginary circles or lines. Walks between celestial occurrences such as sunrises or eclipses or solstices. Routes planned and mapped in the studio then carried out in the real world. Walks carrying stones, throwing stones, dropping stones, piling stones. Splashing water. Photographing campsites or mountaintops. Walks in forests and deserts and plains and villages and cities and leafy country lanes. Walks in which lots happens and walks in which nothing much happens. Walks in which hardly anyone is encountered. Walks executed mainly alone, but sometimes with others. Occasional walks with other artists, or critics, or friends. Walks which produce many sculptures along the way and walks which produce only a few words in a frame. Walks which dont produce any work at all. Favourite walks, favourite routes, favourite places, favourite terrain. Richard Long is a British land artist and sculptor who works with and in the natural world, but also with and within the highly sophisticated, artificial and humanmade world of art and culture. I too wanted to make nature the subject of my work, Long explained of his early work, but in new ways. I started working outside using natural materials like grass and water, and this evolved into the idea of making a sculpture by walking. Fully illustrated, with a revised text. The ancient temple of the Pantheon is the ‘heart’ of Rome. This self-guided walking tour explores the area just beyond the Pantheon and focusses on art and architecture ranging from antiquity through to the seventeenth century. You will be able to view art in the form of sculpture, painting and architecture by simply looking at a façade, or by engaging with public spaces, or by walking into a church—in situ, intrinsically linked to that place, and therefore adding meaning. A few paces behind the Pantheon is a stone elephant with a distinctive personality, and one of the many works of art by sixteenth-century Baroque artist, Gianlorenzo Bernini, seen throughout this walk. The delightful mix of art works inside S. Maria sopra Minerva belies its austere façade. Close by this Dominican stronghold are two Jesuit churches: both orders were powerful forces in the Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation that began with the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and ended in the mid-seventeenth century. Jesuit artists produced art that aimed to inspire devotion in the faithful and non-believers as a means of fighting against Lutheran ‘heresy’. As such, much of Rome’s religious Baroque art was propaganda, aimed at reviving Catholicism’s dominance. The seventeenth-century illusionistic ceiling paintings that you will encounter in the Jesuit churches, Il Gesu and S. Ignazio, are prime examples. In art historical terms ‘baroque’ has come to signify the dominant artistic style of the seventeenth century which originated in Rome in the early 1600s and endured until the end of the century. Much of Baroque painting and sculpture is characterised by drama, natural realism and emotional expressiveness. The increase in tourism en-masse is gradually destroying the individual traveller’s ability to engage directly (and quietly) with the history and magnificence of works of art in ancient cities such as Rome. In this walk you can avoid the hefty entrance fees to galleries and museums, and the jostling of crowds. So be prepared to inhale the atmosphere and linger along the route as long as you like.

Anke Gleber examines one of the most intriguing and characteristic figures of European urban modernity: the observing city stroller, or flaneur. In an age transformed by industrialism, the flaneur drifted through city streets, inspired and repelled by the surrounding scenes of splendor and squalor. Gleber examines this often elusive figure in the particular contexts of Weimar Germany and the intellectual sphere of Walter Benjamin, with whom the concept of flanerie is often associated. She sketches the European influences that produced the German flaneur and establishes the figure as a pervasive presence in Weimar culture, as well as a profound influence on modern perceptions of public space. The book begins by exploring the theory of literary flanerie and the technological changes--street lighting, public transportation, and the emergence of film--that gave a new status to the activities of seeing and walking in the modern city. Gleber then assesses the place of flanerie in works by Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer, and other representatives of Weimar literature, arts, and theory. She draws particular attention to the works of Franz Hessel, a Berlin flaneur who argued that flanerie is a "reading" of the city that perceives passersby, streets, and fleeting impressions as the transitory signs of modernity. Gleber also examines connections between flanerie and Weimar film, and discusses female flanerie as a means of asserting female subjectivity in the public realm. The book is a deeply original and searching reassessment of the complex intersections among modernity, vision, and public space.
