In 1910 Chief Inspector Walter Dew became the most famous detective in the world after a transatlantic chase resulted in him capturing the American murderer Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen. This was the first time that wireless telegraphy had resulted in the arrest of a murderer and it was Dew's final investigation for Scotland Yard. After retiring from the Metropolitan Police and working as a private detective Dew began to write and in 1938 his autobiography I CAUGHT CRIPPEN was published. It subsequently became an important work for crime historians and has long been out-of-print. Dew's accounts of the Crippen case and his futile hunt for Jack the Ripper are the lengthiest ever written by a police officer closely involved in the investigations. The latter part of I CAUGHT CRIPPEN deals with a variety of other cases that Dew worked on, including the arrest of the international jewel thief Harry the Valet. THE ANNOTATED I CAUGHT CRIPPEN makes this classic work available again. It contains a full transcription of the original text, annotated with footnotes including additional material from a newspaper serialisation of Dew's memoirs that has never appeared in a book before. It also features appendices of Dew's other writings and articles written about the celebrated detective during his lifetime.

It is 1921, and Alma Webster, a reader of romances, is passionately in love with her dentist, Walter Baranov. There is only one foreseeable outcome: the murder of his wife. Inspired by the real-life Dr Crippen case, they plot a way to achieve it perfectly aboard the ocean liner, Mauretania. With a fine sense of irony, Baranov takes the identity of Inspector Dew, Crippen's nemesis. But when a murder is reported aboard the ship and 'Inspector Dew' is invited to investigate, the complications begin. Listed in The Times' 100 Best Crime Novels of the Twentieth Century.

Thunderstruck written by Erik Larson and has been published by Crown this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-10-24 with History categories.

A true story of love, murder, and the end of the world’s “great hush.” In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson tells the interwoven stories of two men—Hawley Crippen, a very unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive creator of a seemingly supernatural means of communication—whose lives intersect during one of the greatest criminal chases of all time. Set in Edwardian London and on the stormy coasts of Cornwall, Cape Cod, and Nova Scotia, Thunderstruck evokes the dynamism of those years when great shipping companies competed to build the biggest, fastest ocean liners; scientific advances dazzled the public with visions of a world transformed; and the rich outdid one another with ostentatious displays of wealth. Against this background, Marconi races against incredible odds and relentless skepticism to perfect his invention: the wireless, a prime catalyst for the emergence of the world we know today. Meanwhile, Crippen, “the kindest of men,” nearly commits the perfect murder. With his unparalleled narrative skills, Erik Larson guides us through a relentlessly suspenseful chase over the waters of the North Atlantic. Along the way, he tells of a sad and tragic love affair that was described on the front pages of newspapers around the world, a chief inspector who found himself strangely sympathetic to the killer and his lover, and a driven and compelling inventor who transformed the way we communicate.

The biography of an enigmatic Victorian pioneer. The first critical appraisal of this sporting legend and antiquary, using his own archives and writings. Important glimpses of everyday Victorian life. Suitable for those with interests in sport, local history, genealogy and record editing. Walter Rye was a London solicitor until he retired to Norwich, but it was three spare-time passions that earned him his place in the Dictionary of National Biography: physical exercise, record-searching, and a devotion to his ancestral county of Norfolk. His love of the outdoors was unbounded: athlete, cyclist, sailor and archer, keen amateur gardener and naturalist. Despite this, mortal illness seemed to stalk him, and yet he lived well into his eighties. In A Passion for Records, Rye’s prolific writings as author, columnist and correspondent, replete with witty put-downs, offer many laugh-out-loud moments. His antiquarian writings invite more serious attention, after cautionary tales about his editorial techniques.

Book thirteen in the Inspector Lestrade series. ‘I cannot sing the old songs I sang long years ago, For heart and voice would fail me And foolish tears would flow.’ Claribel Recovering from a broken leg after his ignominious fall from the Titanic, Superintendent Lestrade goes to convalesce at the home of his betrothed, Fanny Berkley and her father Tom, the Chief Commissioner of Surrey. It should have been a relatively peaceful time, apart from Lestrade’s lack of dexterity in steering his Bath chair, but an attempt on the life of his father-in-law (that kills the butler instead) makes him realise that a policeman is never really off duty. What is even more puzzling is the arrival of a letter which simply reads ‘Four for the Gospel Makers’ – and it isn’t the first Lestrade’s been sent. So begins one of Sholto Lestrade’s most mystifying cases; a case that encompasses not only the present, but the past. Lestrade walks down Memory Lane to the time when he was a young and very naïve constable. He looks back on episodes in his career that never came to a satisfactory conclusion and that hold other clues as to who the sender of the letters is – because whoever it is, it is a cold blooded killer.
