I was asked to write it, but I was ready to do so, although it is not pleasant to have to controvert the views Of a brother for whom I have the high regard that I entertain for Mr. Campbell. I am far from being unsympathetic with the attempt he has made to give us a New Theology, and we must not be too hard on him even if we think he has erred greatly with respect to some most important matters. Urged by similar motives, the present writer some twenty years ago went even further than Mr. Campbell in some directions, although not so far in others. But he became able in time to work his way back to the evangelical faith without any sacrifice of truth or consistency. Ministers and others are Often suspected of just saying what they are obliged or expected to say, owing to their position. Not a word of what I have written but has been most care fully weighed, lest it should not be in accordance with whatever can even remotely be considered as the voice of the Church. I am not aware that I have said any thing for Which I had not authority. It is, however, our misfortune that, living as we do in a country which is not Catholic, we are obliged, in order to obtain a hear ing, to master the opinions and to use the language of those around us. In thus treating of theological mat ters, I may most unwittingly have used erroneous ex pressions. If so, most unreservedly do I profess my perfect willingness to correct them. I claim no indul gence for myself except on the score of upright inten tions. From the bottom of my heart do I disclaim any view that theology is to be remodelled to suit the wants of the age; and if I had such a view, I should not be so silly as to think myself capable of doing it. Excerpt from Christian Dogmatics The need of a comprehensive treatise on Christian doctrine of a scientific character is admitted on all hands. Even the best productions of foreign theologians do not seem altogether suitable as manuals for our theological students. Outlines by British writers of various schools are for the most part too meagre, and in some instances their usefulness is impaired by want of proportion in the treatment of the several doc trines of the system. The attempt has been made in the present work to give a systematic presentation in methodical order of all the leading doctrines of the Christian faith. The standpoint is that of. A moderate Calvinism. The history of dogmas has been introduced only in so far as is necessary for the clear and intelligible statement of the positive doctrine. In like manner, no attempt has been made to develop in detail the biblical element, except in so far as this is needed to supply the foundation for the dogmas accepted and formu lated by the Church. Special attention has been given to the preparation of the lists of literature placed at the head of the several sections. Only such treatises are mentioned as have been found distinctly helpful in the discussion of the particular subject of the section, and references are made to comprehensive and general works on dogmatics only when the treatment in them of the subject dealt with is more or less remarkable for fulness or suggestiveness. Others before him, especially pious lay men, had noticed these evils, but had withdrawn, like the mystics of a former period, and sought in private contemplation that satisfaction of their spiritual wants which they could not obtain from the learned jargon of the pulpit; or if, like An dreas and Arndt, they had lifted up a voice of rem onstrance against the prevailing disorders, it had been drowned in the noise of angry pole mics. But the reputation and influence of Spener were too great to allow his remonstrances to pass unnoticed. Without aiming at the name, he performed the work of a reformer. In the unpretending form of a preface to an edition of Arndt's Sermons, he published in 1675 his Pia Desidert'a, in which he urged the necessity of amending the prevailing mode of instruction and preaching. It was his great object to divert attention from the symbols, and direct it to the scriptures. He wished every student to derive his system for himself directly from the Bible; and to feel and enjoy the truths thus learned, rather than contend about them; and especially he wished the teachers in the universities, and the preachers in the desk, abandoning for ever their foolish questions and subtle dialectics, to labour to promote the solid instruction and the true piety of those committed to their charge.
