Part diary, part journalistic dispatches this volume, originally published in 1918 is a short history of the Caucasus campaign and connects the events that were taking place in the Middle East with the past history of Central Asia. Witnessing the effects of the Russian Revolution on the Asiatic provinces, the author reveals the real state of Asiatic Russia, in the months preceding the Russian Revolution and shows how the Russian reaction was in part responsible for the disastrous state of affairs in Armenia and was contributing with the Turkish Government to bring that country to the verge of ruin.

Morgan Philips Price, the author of this valuable eye-witness account of the Great War and the early Russian Revolution as seen from the vast territories of the Caucasus in central Asia was a British left-wing journalist. A pacifist on the outbreak of war in 1914 he was recruited by the liberal 'Manchester Guardian' as a Russian-speaker to cover the war on the Eastern Front. The first part of the book describes Russian reverses and the chaotic state of the Tsar's war effort. Shocked by the chaos ( and unable to report if because of military censorship) Philips Price retreated to the Caucasus where he organised relief work for refugees. On the outbreak of the Russian revolution in 1917 he saw - with sympathy - the emergence of workers, soldiers and peasants' Soviets which he hoped would overturn what he called the 'medieval barbarism' of the Tsar and usher in a new era of peace and progress. He was not to know that he was seeing the birth of a new barbarism far worse than the old. Philips returned home, became a long-term Labour MP, and died in 1973.

Although the Russian Empire has traditionally been viewed as a European borderland, most of its territory was actually situated in Asia. Imperial power was huge but often suffered from a lack of enough information and resources to rule its culturally diverse subjects, and asymmetric relations between state and society combined with flexible strategies of local actors sometimes produced unexpected results. In Asiatic Russia, an international team of scholars explores the interactions between power and people in Central Asia, Siberia, the Volga-Urals, and the Caucasus from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, drawing on a wealth of Russian archival materials and Turkic, Persian, and Tibetan sources. The variety of topics discussed in the book includes the Russian idea of a "civilizing mission," the system of governor-generalships, imperial geography and demography, roles of Muslim and Buddhist networks in imperial rule and foreign policy, social change in the Russian Protectorate of Bukhara, Muslim reformist and national movements. The book is essential reading for students and scholars of Russian, Central Eurasian, and comparative imperial history, as well as imperial and colonial studies and nationalism studies. It may also provide some hints for understanding today’s world, where "empire" has again become a key word in international and domestic power relations.

On The Religious Frontier written by Firouzeh Mostashari and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-30 with History categories.

Modern Russia's turbulent relations with its Muslim frontiers date back centuries. Indeed the nineteenth century, when the Muslim Caucasus first came under Russian rule, witnessed many of the historical antecedents to today's violent confrontations. With this in mind, On The Religious Frontier examines the history of Muslim Azerbaijan under Christian Orthodox Russian imperial rule and the attempts of the Russian administrators of the Caucasus to integrate the region into the empire. Drawing on original archival research from across Azerbaijan and Russia, Firouzeh Mostashari considers the formation of a Russian colonial administration in the Muslim Caucasus; subsequent social, political and economic developments; and the local responses to conquest, military rule and Russification. From 1804 to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, On The Religious Frontier offers a fascinating and timely insight into both the period itself and the ways in which the seeds of recent conflict were sown in tsarist Russia. This is important reading for all scholars of the history and politics of the Caucasus, as well as those with an interest in imperial Russia and its relationship with minority groups.
