Only eighteen when he joined the 55th Ohio Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, William Allen Keesy nevertheless went on to serve twice in the war. Honorably discharged for severe illness, he agreed to be drafted back into service and saw some of the fiercest fighting in the war.At Cross Keys, Second Bull Run, Gettysburg, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, the siege of Atlanta, and Sherman's march, the 55th was hotly engaged until the bitter end. Keesy saw most of it and records it here "as viewed from the ranks."Funny, thrilling, and horrible, it is a valuable addition to the corpus of Civil War memoirs.Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

Excerpt from War as Viewed From the Ranks: Personal Recollections of the War of the Rebellion, by a Private Soldier In preparing this volume for publication, the author, to be frank, must confess that he had several motives in view. Chief among them, no doubt, is the selfish ambition to put in as permanent form as may be what he saw and did during the country's greatest storm and struggle. And also in this to show what the thousands of comrades did whose modesty and possible inability prevent them from a public display of their gallantry and heroism, before which his would pale away into oblivion. Another motive actuating him is to set before the public mind in as true and clear a light as may be what actual part the private soldier took in the great civil war. It is a well known fact that history generally accords the toils and honors, as well as achievements, to the officers of the army. It is not intended by this volume to pluck one laurel from the noble brow, nor detract one ray of glory from the lustrious fame of any brave and gallant commander of the teeming hosts in that mighty conflict. No! No! But if one star may be added to the crown of the private, if his intrinsic worth may be put forward and his name be made endearing and lasting, surely no one will object. The author had in view also, the edification of the present generation. And the many little incidents related will go far to explain much that otherwise must be obscure to tho.se who have not had personal observation of war. With a hope that it may be accepted and appreciated by a generous public, as we already have the guarantee that it is by our comrades, we present it to you. Chickamauga, Stone River, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, and Sherman's March to the Sea. Lieutenant Colonel Michael Hendrick Fitch was at all of them and more. Looking back 40 years, he recounts the battles, the humorous tales, the anecdotes of Grant and other famous soldiers whom he met, and simple soldier stories. "As we crossed a creek before arriving at the battlefield, the horses all stopped to drink. Grant pulled out his match-box and lighted a cigar. While he was doing this, his horse let fly with his hind foot at [Baldy] Smith’s horse. Whereupon Smith hit Grant’s horse across the rump with his stick and at the same time made some familiar remark to Grant about riding such a vicious horse. I was looking intently at Grant at the time and was struck with his perfect stolid indifference. He never for an instant changed the position of his hand or head in lighting his cigar, nor said a word, nor did he seem conscious of the episode, though his horse moved up suddenly. I thought it very characteristic of his qualities as a soldier." Front-line letters, diaries, and stories of the Civil War bring an immediacy to a long-ago event and connect us to these everyday men and women who lived it. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Though his name is not recognized by more than a handful of Americans, he revolutionized the way large armies and equipment were moved in wartime. He offered to work without rank or pay but eventually accepted a commission...with conditions as told in this book. The fascinating story of how the largest army in history to that date was almost miraculously moved from place to place during the American Civil War is revealed in this volume by General Herman Haupt. He was also key to understanding how the Confederate armies moved and warned General Meade of the impending approach to Gettysburg by Robert E. Lee. Of special interest is Haupt's assessments of the generals and men he worked with during the war, including Lincoln, Grant, Meade, Hooker, Burnside, and more. A successful businessman before and after the war, General Haupt was still working at age 85, when this book was first published. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. One of the most interesting and compelling descriptions of the battles of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville is found in J.D. Bloodgoods long-forgotten 1893 memoir. Bloodgood was an enlisted private of Company I, of the One Hundred and Forty-first Regiment of Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to a sergeant, wounded at Gettysburg, Pa., July 2, 1863, and mustered out of the service at the close of the war with a record as a good and efficient soldier. An educated man, his observations and descriptions go beyond battlefield chaos and give you the feeling of what the line soldier and officer experienced. After the war, he revisited Gettysburg and his return is a story in itself. For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
