'Fides quaerent intellectum', Glaube der nach Einsicht sucht, wird zur programmatischen Vorgehensweise bei seiner Suche nach dem Grund der Menschwerdung Gottes. Indem er die geltende Redemptionstheorie durch seine Überlegungen überwindet, zeigt er, wie der unendliche Sühnewert von Jesu Tod die Menschheit mit Gott versöhnt. Im Zentrum steht nicht die Schuld des Menschen, sondern der Wert Jesu Tat und die darin zum Ausdruck kommende Liebe Gottes.

A Systems Theory of Religion, still unfinished at Niklas Luhmann's death in 1998, was first published in German two years later thanks to the editorial work of André Kieserling. When a popular British evangelical leader appeared to denounce the idea that God was punishing Christ in our place on the cross as a twisted version of events, morally dubious, and a huge barrier to faith that should be rejected in favour of preaching only that God is love, major controversy was stirred.
