The Burgtheater And Austrian Identity written by Robert Pyrah and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-02 with Social Science categories.

"The collapse of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918 galvanized discussion about national identity in the new Republic of Austria. As Robert Pyrah shows in this thoroughly documented study, the complex identity politics of interwar Austria were played out in the theatres of Vienna, which enjoyed a cultural prominence rarely matched in other countries. By 1934, productions across the city were being co-opted to serve the newly patriotic cause of the Dollfuss and Schuschnigg regimes, and the Burgtheater, once known as the first German stage, had been transformed into a national theatre for Austria. Using case studies of key productions and a wealth of previously unseen archival material, Pyrah sheds new light on artistic and ideological developments throughout the period, including the neglected earlier years. He documents previously unexplored overlaps in the cultural programmes of Left and Right, and unearths evidence that key institutions were subverted by the Right well before the suspension of parliamentary rule in 1933."

The essays assembled in this volume grew out of a conference held at Cornell University in November 2001. The goal of the conference was to examine the claim that the city-state of Hamburg had a unique status in the cultural landscape of eighteenth and nineteenth-century Germany, a status based upon the city’s republican political constitution. Hamburg’s independence and its tolerant and cosmopolitan political traditions made it a focal point for progressive cultural developments during the period of the Enlightenment and after. The contributions collected here transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries by giving equal attention to literature, music, and theater, as well as to architecture and city planning. Key essays address the role that figures as diverse as C.P.E. Bach, Lessing, Klopstock, Heine, Brahms, and Thomas Mann played in shaping Hamburg’s exceptional quality as a center of culture. This volume will be of interest not only to scholars doing research on Hamburg, but also to anyone with an interest in the cultural history of eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth-century Germany.

Welttheater written by Judith Beniston and has been published by MHRA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Austrian drama categories.

Hugo von Hofmannsthal had a lifelong fascination with the theatrum mundi topos. Judith Beniston analyses his changing responses to it against an unfamiliar backdrop - the revival of Catholic drama which, from the 1890s onwards, accompanied the rise of Austria's Christian Social party. The solipsism of `Jung Wien' and the conservative modernism of the Salzburg Festival are juxtaposed with the career of Richard von Kralik (1852-1934), the key figure in Austria's Catholic literary culture from 1890 to 1934. This study offers close readings of Das kleine Welttheater and Das Salzburger grosse Welttheater, and explores the ramifications of the fascination with the notion of Welttheater which Hofmannsthal and Kralik shared. In juxtaposing elite and popular culture, Beniston sheds new light on a neglected aspect of Austrian cultural history, on the selectivity of Hofmannsthal's approach towards Austria's Baroque tradition, and on the difficulties he faced in his attempt to assimilate his own work into it.

This monograph is a model essay on the functioning of a municipal German-language theatre, and it introduces a new view into research led by both theatre scientists and musicologists on the European scene. The book is conceived as social history of a citizen's cultural institution and interprets a wide range of problematic themes which we meet to this day in the everyday practice of municipal theatres.

Quodlibets Of The Viennese Theater written by Lisa Feurzeig and has been published by A-R Editions, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-01 with Music categories.

The quodlibet genre was significant in Viennese theater during the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Quodlibets are important for two reasons: they reflect the ironic intertextuality of Viennese life, and they present a cross-section of music of many genres and styles that was most familiar to the theatergoing audience. This edition includes three works: Die travestierte Ariadne auf Naxos (ca. 1799), a one-act melodrama with spoken and sung sections; Rochus Pumpernickel (1809), a three-act play with musical numbers; and "Das beliebte Quodlibet" from Der Eheteufel auf Reisen (1821), a medley that represent different times and styles, tracing the history of the genre. Ariadne auf Naxos, a parody of the 1775 Brandes/Benda melodrama, borrows the original text almost completely, but replaces Benda¿s music with comical melodies drawn from the Vienna Volkstheater and adds a happy ending. Rochus Pumpernickel, with a story based on Molière and twenty-seven musical numbers, was the most successful of all the full-length quodlibet plays; the high-brow periodical Der Sammler paid it the back-handed compliment of saying that its author "writes for the box office, not for immortality." With music ranging from Mozart and Haydn to Méhul, Salieri, Weigl, Wenzel Müller, and anonymous folksong, it offers a rich assortment of material familiar and unfamiliar to modern scholars. Dance music plays a significant role, so this play also opens a window on the Viennese dance world. The medley "Das beliebte Quodlibet" combines opera, folksong, and Tyrolerlied into a quasi-political jab at the police state. The edition provides literal English translations of all the texts, and the two full-length works also include performable translations underlaid in the music. An extensive commentary section identifies musical sources and discusses how pieces are reinterpreted in their new contexts.

Women Warriors In Romantic Drama written by Wendy C. Nielsen and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Performing Arts categories.

Women Warriors in Romantic Drama examines a recurring figure that appears in French, British, and German drama between 1789 and 1830: the woman warrior. The term itself, “woman warrior,” refers to quasi-historical female soldiers or assassins. Women have long contributed to military campaigns as canteen women. Camp followers ranged from local citizenry to spouses and prostitutes, and on occasion, women assisted men in combat. However, the woman warrior is a romantic figure, meaning a fanciful ideal, despite the reality of women’s participation in select scenes of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. The central claim of this book is the woman warrior is a way for some women writers (Olympe de Gouges, Christine Westphalen, Karoline von Günderrode, and Mary Robinson) to explore the case for extending citizenship to women. This project focuses primarily on theater for the reason that the stage simulates the public world that female dramatists and their warriors seek to inhabit. Novels and poetry clearly belong to the realm of fiction, but when audiences see women fighting onstage, they confront concrete visions of impossible women. I examine dramas in the context of their performance and production histories in order to answer why so many serious dramas featuring women warriors fail to find applause, or fail to be staged at all. Dramas about women warriors seem to sometimes contribute to the argument for female citizenship when they take the form of tragedy, because the deaths of female protagonists in such plays often provoke consideration about women’s place in society. Consequently, where we find women playing soldiers in various entertainment venues, farce and satire often seem to dominate, although this book points to some exceptions. Censorship and audience demand for comedies made producing tragedies difficult for female playwrights, who battled additional obstacles to fashioning their careers. I compare male (Edmund Eyre, Heinrich von Kleist) and female writers’ dramatizations of the woman warrior. This analysis shows that the difficult project of getting audiences to take women warriors seriously resembles women writers’ struggles to enter the ostensibly male domains of tragedy and the public sphere. Published by University of Delaware Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.
