Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants. Consequently, these branches of industry have enjoyed the most zealous atten tion of the scientist and of the engineer. I have endeavoured in the present monograph to give a survey, short perhaps, but as complete as possible, of the present position in regard to Water Purification and Sewage Disposal. Owing to the wide range of this subject particular processes could only be treated shortly in the space at disposal. One chapter, which is very fully treated in the present volume, though slightly elsewhere, is the disposal of industrial sewage. Many of the processes of purification are of quite recent date, and fresh experience is being obtained daily and reported upon in the most diverse publications. I have endeavoured to collect such information. Excerpt from Water Purification by Ozone In 1785 it was discovered by'van Marum that a disruptive dis charge of electricity through air is accompanied by a peculiar odor. The cause of this odor was not known until 1840 when Sconbein, a swiss chemist. Discovered it to be a gas then unknown to chemistry. Sconbein found that the new gas which he called ozone. Is an allotro pic form of oxygen produced by the passage of an electric current through ordinary oxygen, and that it is very unstable, decomposing easily into ordinary oxygen. It was found that because of this in stability ozone is a very active oxidizing agent. As such it has been found applicable as a bleacher and as a purifier.
