Steven Faulkner and his 16-year-old son Justin are paddling and portaging their way along the 1000-mile, 1673, Mississippi discovery route of French explorers Marquette and Joliet. Tired, hungry, lost, lonely, fogbound, canoe-wrecked, unable to make their way in the darkness, they are having an excellent time—paddling 300 miles along Lake Michigan’s shore to Green Bay, Wisconsin, then 300 miles up the storm-flooded Fox River, down the Wisconsin River, then turning south for 400 miles down the mighty Mississippi to St. Louis. Waterwalk is a triple journey: a journey into the heart of this continent 300 years ago—as depicted in Marquette’s own journal (a translation of which Faulkner found in the basement of a University of Kansas library), a modern exploration of the quiet waterways that weave their way through busy, rush-around America, and a voyage through the heart of a father-son relationship. “Something in us,” says Faulkner, “longs to go the way of the river, to lie down on those silken currents and swing away from the bank and move along mile after mile. There’s something there that’s wild and strong and asleep in mystery . . .And all the while, rivers spoke to us in unfamiliar languages, the winds warned us of unheeded perils, statues came alive and shared their stories, and a father and son tried to learn the language of friendship and interdependence."

Tired, hungry, lost, fogbound, shipwrecked, unable to make their way through the darkness,, Steven Faulkner and his teenage son Justin are having a wonderful time. They are on an epic journey, retracing the historic 1673 route of pioneer French explorers Louis Joliet and Jesuit Priest Jacques Marquette along the Lake Michigan shore to Green Bay, up the Fox River, then down the Wisconsin to the mighty Mississippi. The Faulkners depend on the kindness of strangers who understand that no dam is high enough to stop this intrepid pair who must walk part of their water route to portage around the works of modern man. Along the way they make news in a terrifying accident, travel through uncharted waters and create a story that puts Waterwalk in the front rank of travel literature. A poet with a sense of humor, Steven Faulkner brings the majestic American heartland to life in this unforgettable story. Waterwalk is one of the finest books ever written about an American river journey and will appeal to anyone who has a sense of adventure.

Spirituals were an intrinsic part of the African-American plantation life and were sung at all important occasions and events. This volume is the first index of African-American spirituals to be published in more than half a century and will be an important research tool for scholars and students of African-American history and music. The first collection of slave songs appeared in 1843, without musical notation, in a series of three articles by a Methodist Church missionary identified simply as c. Collections that included musical notation began appearing in the 1850s. The earliest book-length collection of spirituals containing both lyrics and music was published in 1867 and entitled Slave Songs of the United States. Not since the 1930s, with the publication of the Index to Negro Spirituals by the Cleveland Public Library, has an index of spirituals been compiled. The spirituals are neatly organized in four indexes: a title index, first line index, alternate title index and a topical index that includes twenty major categories. A bibliography of indexed sources serves as a guide for further research.
