"Watermills were once commonplace but, because of their domestic scale and their often picturesque waterside locations, many have now lost their waterwheels and machinery and the buildings have been converted to other uses. Water power has been used for over 2000 years, initially for grinding grain and pumping water, and later for driving processing machinery for a wide variety of industries, which had a far-reaching effect on the economic and social development of Britain from the middle of the eighteenth century. In this new book, watermill expert Martin Watts, author of the Shire book Water and Wind Power , explains the history and development of watermills as working buildings and the importance of the wider appreciation of the built environment and the use of natural sources of power."--Wheelers.co.nz.

Published in September of 1925 in the Joseon Mundan, “The Water Mill”, along with his other short story “Mulberry”, is the most representative of his realistic writing style. Like Kim Yu-jeong’s “April Showers” (Sonakbi) and Yi Hyo-seok’s “When the Buckwheat Flower Blooms” (Maemilkkot Pil Muryup), it is a work that illustrates a tragic love affair that happens at the water mill. In other words, this piece depicts the passionate crime that involves Shin Chi-kyu, a wealthy and powerful man in the village, his farmhand and servant Lee Bang-won, and Lee Bang-won’s wife. Although we see aspects of class conflict in “The Water Mill”, it is fundamentally a piece that realistically illustrates the intrinsic nature and sexual desire of man. “The Water Mill” paints a vivid picture of man’s greed for material wealth, his sexual instincts, and the poverty that exists, as well as the feelings of loss that result from it. It is a piece that graphically exposes the dark reality of the Colonial Period and the nature of man that originated from it.

This book is the most comprehensive empirical study to date of the social and technical aspects of milling during the ancient and medieval periods.Drawing on the latest archaeological evidence and historical studies, the book examines the chronological development and technical details of handmills, beast mills, watermills and windmills from the first millennium BCE to c. 1500. It discusses the many and varied uses to which mills were turned in the civilisations of Rome, China, Islam and Europe, and the many types of mill that existed. The book also includes comparative regional studies of the social and economic significance of milling, and tackles several important historiographical issues, such as whether technological stagnation was a characteristic of late Antiquity, whether there was an industrial revolution" in the European Middle Ages based on waterpower, and how contemporary studies in the social shaping of technology can shed light on the study of pre-modern technology."

Excerpt from History of Corn Milling, Vol. 2: Watermills and Windmills In Volume I. the varied forms of archaic handstones are seen to culminate in the Roman quern, from which were developed revolving mills driven by slave or cattle labour. In the present Volume the history is taken up from that point, and the development of the several forms of power corn mill traced from the classic ages to the advent of steam. Such a record is not merely one of the manufacture of flour. The art of milling has been most slow of growth: evolving itself from absolute crudity to modern perfection but gradually, and as it were very leisurely, as the centuries passed away. But in tracing this apparently listless and lethargic evolution, we are brought face to face with affairs which not only largely account for it, but which in no slight degree are found to react upon the social life and industrial welfare of the people of all nations. Peculiar laws and restrictions have for hundreds of years denied the corn miller freedom to trade (and even personal freedom), encouragement to progress, and permission to compete for quality and cheapness of work. And the same restrictions have filtered and doled the flour of the people through feudal legislative channels, and retarded for many ages the production of that cheap bread with which the welfare of the masses is so intimately concerned. These matters seem as well worthy of study as the political and military troubles or glories of nations: and it is in this view that the authors have approached a subject which has hitherto been almost entirely overlooked. Referring to the mills, all power corn mills are shown to be directly derived from the Greek watermill, the simple little machine with horizontal wheel, and devoid of gearing, which, under the designation "Norse Mill," survives in some places to the present day. The intervention of the Roman watermill, of larger capacity and greater power, with a vertical wheel driving stones through the intervention of cog gearing. 112 full-color artistic photographs of watermills still standing on the North American landscape The scenic beauty of the watermill is undeniable. The iconic waterwheel has inspired romantics for generations with their warmth and charm. Watermills were once ubiquitous landmarks along brooks, creeks, and rivers across North America. Today, only a scattering of the old watermills grace the countryside, but through these mills, and the turning of their wheels and the whirling of their stones, a small but spectacular part of history lives on. Through stunningly beautiful images, Historic Watermills of North America: A Visual Preservation presents 112 watermills still standing on the North American landscape. With idealized full-color photographs, Ken Boyd nostalgically hearkens back to a time after European settlement when these structures were the very heart of the communities whose livelihoods they made possible. These mills turned the power of flowing water into mechanical energy to grind corn and wheat into meal and flour, saw timber, loom wool and cotton cloth, and more for the benefit of their operators and communities. At one time vital to their surrounding regions, most of these surviving mills are in rural areas that have been passed over by modern development. Their designs are as individual as their makers, and their settings are as varied as the landscape. Some have been converted into homes or museums or are part of local tourist attractions. Others have been abandoned but give witness to the significance of their heydays, and others are still in use, doing the same work they have done for generations. Boyd’s beautifully rendered photographs preserve these extant structures and represent a variety of watermills across the United States and Canada. Each mill photograph is accompanied by a description providing the name of the mill, its location, date of construction, and brief comments highlighting its most noteworthy features. Additional photographs and commentary in the afterword explore the inner workings of watermills.
