In Mapping Metaphorical Discourse in the Fourth Gospel, Beth M. Stovell examines the metaphor of Jesus as king throughout the Fourth Gospel using an interdisciplinary metaphor theory incorporating cognitive and systemic functional linguistic approaches with literary approaches. Stovell argues that the theme of Jesus as king provides one of the unifying themes of John’s overall message. Examining the place of the Old Testament metaphors of Messiah, “eternal life/life of the age,” shepherd, and exaltation in the conceptual metaphorical network of John’s Gospel, Stovell asserts that John’s Gospel describes the just character of Jesus’ kingship, the subversion of power implicit in his crucified form of kingship, and the necessity of response to Jesus as king and his reign.

Sin, often defined as a violation of divine will, remains a crucial idea in contemporary moral and religious discourse. However, the apparent familiarity of the concept obscures its origins within the history of Western religious thought. Joseph Lam examines a watershed moment in the development of sin as an idea-namely, within the language and culture of ancient Israel-by examining the primary metaphors used for sin in the Hebrew Bible. Drawing from contemporary theoretical insights coming out of linguistics and philosophy of language, this book identifies four patterns of metaphor that pervade the biblical texts: sin as burden, sin as an account, sin as path or direction, and sin as stain or impurity. In exploring the permutations of these metaphors and their development within the biblical corpus, Patterns of Sin in the Hebrew Bible offers a compelling account of how a religious and theological concept emerges out of the everyday thought-world of ancient Israel, while breaking new ground in its approach to metaphor in ancient texts. Previous scholars have largely approached Wisdom and Torah in the Second Temple Period through a type of reception history, whereby the two concepts have been understood as signifiers of independent, earlier “biblical” streams of tradition that later came together in the Hellenistic and Roman eras, largely under the process of a so-called “torahization” of wisdom. Recent studies critiquing the nature of wisdom and wisdom literature as operative categories for understanding scribal cultures in early Judaism, as well as newer approaches to conceptualizing Torah and authorizing-compositional practices related to the Pentateuchal texts, however, have challenged the foundations on which the previous models of Wisdom and Torah rested. This volume, therefore, brings together several essays that aim to reexamine and rethink the ways we can describe the developments of texts categorized as “Wisdom” that proliferated during the Second Temple Period and whose contents point to an engagement with a “Torah” discourse. By asking anew the question of whether “Wisdom” was transformed by/into “Torah” during this period, this volume offers reformulations on the discursive space between Wisdom and Torah through analyzing new identifications, confluences, and transformations.

Metaphorical expressions not only appear in poetic texts of the Old Testament but also in legal texts. In particular, they appear in the preambles to collections of laws, in their final summaries, in more general considerations on compliance with and violation of the law, in texts concerning the meaning of the law, dealing with topics that are now dealt with in law theory or law philosophy. Metaphorical expressions usually reveal how the authors of the relevant Torah / Law texts understood their function in society, in culture. They testify to the place of the Torah / Law in the system of values, about what society preferred in the law. The following monograph is a contribution to the scholarly debate, which is methodologically anchored in cognitive and culturally oriented linguistics. Its focus is to investigate Hebrew metaphorical expressions concerning one of the key Old Testament concept Torah / Law. The author focuses on the identification of Hebrew conceptual metaphors and on the explanation of the meaning of the respective metaphorical expressions. Another area in which the use of cognitive linguistic analyses and the interpretation of metaphorical expressions has proven to be very effective is in the area of translation. The third chapter of this book is given to look at modern translations of selected metaphorical expressions into modern Czech and English. Another possible application of cognitive linguistic analyses of metaphorical expressions in the semantic field Law is represented by the final case study. The study brings the results of cognitive semantic analyses of the didactic human rights material Compass: Manual for Human Rights Education with Young People with regard to the metaphors used to conceptualize the concept of human rights.
