Educating Muslim Women written by Beverley Mack and has been published by Kube Publishing Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-23 with History categories.

Nana Asma'u was a devout, learned Muslim who was able to observe, record, interpret, and influence the major public events that happened around her. Daughters are still named after her, her poems still move people profoundly, and the memory of her remains a vital source of inspiration and hope. Her example as an educator is still followed: the system she set up in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, for the education of rural women, has not only survived in its homeland through the traumas of the colonization of West Africa and the establishment of the modern state of Nigeria but is also being revived and adapted elsewhere, notably among Muslim women in the United States. This book, richly illustrated with maps and photographs, recounts Asma'u's upbringing and critical junctures in her life from several sources, mostly unpublished: her own firsthand experiences presented in her writings, the accounts of contemporaries who witnessed her endeavors, and the memoirs of European travelers. For the account of her legacy the authors have depended on extensive field studies in Nigeria, and documents pertaining to the efforts of women in Nigeria and the United States, to develop a collective voice and establish their rights as women and Muslims in today's societies. Beverley Mack is an associate professor of African studies at the University of Kansas. She is co-editor (with Catherine Coles) of Hausa Women in the Twentieth Century and co-author (with Jean Boyd) of The Collected Works of Nana Asma'u, 1793 1864 and One Woman's Jihad: Nana Asma'u Scholar and Scribe. Jean Boyd is former principal research fellow of the Sokoto History Bureau and research associate of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She is the author

Inside Independent Nigeria written by Clive S. Gray and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-01 with Political Science categories.

This title was first published in 2003.Wolfgang Stolper was one of the first Western economists to serve as an adviser in the government of an independent African country. In 1960 he was brought in by the Nigerian government to help shape Nigeria’s first post-independence development plan. His remarkably candid diaries chronicle his struggles and frustrations with officials, interference, waste and corruption at the heart of a government and unfolds the extraordinary story of his warmth and friendship with a country and its people. Brutally frank, compelling and disarmingly thoughtful, Inside Independent Nigeria brings to light one of the most exceptional documents on post-independence Nigeria, and delivers a fascinating picture of a pivotal era in the development of Western economic planning in Africa. No student or researcher of African political history, economics or development studies will want to be without this utterly riveting book.

Politics As Dashed Hopes In Nigeria written by Anwar, Auwalu and has been published by Safari Books Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-23 with Political Science categories.

Politics as Dashed Hopes in Nigeria details the experiences of the author, who ran a gubernatorial campaign for the Congress for Progressive Change in Kano State, in 2011, with the politics within the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), leading to the 2011 elections in Nigeria, particularly in Kano State and Nigeria’s presidency. The book reveals the inner workings of the CPC and the intriguing drama that unfolded within its inner caucus discusses the tactical blunders and errors of judgement which were responsible for the party’s unimpressive performance in the 2011 polls in Kano State in particular and the nation at large. These accounts are also the story of the then leader of the CPC, General Muhammadu Buhari, whose image loomed large in the activities of the party; the idea of the existence of a cult-figure in Nigerian politics, versus the concept of due process in political party administration, is, therefore, an issue of paramount interest to the book.

This text provides an account of the dynamic interplay between the political and economic forces that have shaped government priorities and strategies in Africa's most populous country. The author examines efforts to build a stronger federal centre, to develop national policies, to counter uneven development, and to reduce conflicts that have arisen from ethnic, regional, class and religious differences. A final section analyzes the evolution of economic policy and performance, looking specifically at agrarian policy, the programme of economic liberalization, and the impact of oil revenues.
