This English translation from the Dutch volume is a study of a quotation by St. Augustine as it was understood in the late medieval period. Marijn de Kroon focuses on how this quotation was interpreted by two theologians: Wessel Gansfort, the Northern humanist and theologian connected to theDevotio modernaand the Brethren of the Common Life, and Martin Bucer, the Protestant reformer who further developed Gansfort's ideas. This study is accompanied by a series of shorter texts, all showing the reception of Augustine's phrase in late medieval theology and contrasting it with Gansfort's understanding of it, which Bucer was to adopt. With his commented edition of sourcetexts, de Kroon throws a new light on the links between late medieval and Reformation thought, demonstrating how a fully fledged reformer like Bucer used the works of medieval theologians. In fact, this is the first work to point to a concrete case of Gansfort's influence on the Reformation.

Gods remedy its still available today to anyone who truly desires to attain it and can decipher that its only through discipleship that a true believer is infected with the enthusiasm, zeal, and eagerness in the commitment to fulfill John 8:31 and Matthew 28:19, reaching to those around them who thirst and hunger for the things of God, and in that process, experience the life He promises we can live now. Its time to abandon, once and for all, the current practices of mass-producing supporters, and inscribe it into our minds that the Great Commission was not to make believers but to make disciples. The early church didn't churn out cheerleaders and advocates but bona fide disciples, taught and equipped according to Ephesians 6:1017, who then, as members of the body of Christ, led by example, transforming them into a formidable, most powerful and effective force the Roman Empire had ever seen. Again, I want to reiterate that I am not against the church, as organized by the apostles, but want to revolutionize it, where discipleship is the top priority and purpose for its existence. I am critical of the current organized version that has taken the place of the real church, that nowadays is wasting vast resources and investing them in huge entertainment amphitheaters, and often dilute, distort, and obscure the true message and method to attain this new life established by our Lord. Unless this change happens, we cant truly reach and change a lost world. Our Real Life in Christ seeks to help those who are experiencing that gnawing sensation that there is much more to Gods Word than what is being offered by those weekly sermons in churches today.

Absolutes As a Christian it is foundational, I believe, to hold to absolutes. For example; a Christian should have absolutes about God's ontology (the principle of being), absolutes about theology (the study of God), absolutes about Christology (the study of Christ) and absolutes about pneumatology (the study of the Holy Spirit). Each of the foregoing absolutes, I believe, impact upon how one constructs a world view and how one considers the wider implications of God's kingdom work; hence, why I have titled this collection of essays "Without absolutes, God is not God". I guess the reader will be asking him or herself why is there a requirement to hold to absolutes. The need for absolutes is not complex. In reality the argument determines whether one is a believer or non-believer in the triune God. A believer will weigh whether God revelationally' speaks into this world generally and specifically. A non-believer will object to such a proposition and as a consequence leave him or herself open to other belief systems. To perhaps put it another way a non-believer is faced with the choice of deciding whether God is a reality or whether God is a creation of human imagination. Decision making, then, is crucial when accepting the triune God and his work. Does one make a decision to believe in God empirically or does one make a decision to believe in God from a position of faith? It is my view that God cannot be known empirically (i.e. by trial or experience) but rather he can only be known by faith. However, it depends on how we define faith. Those who accept other belief systems would argue that they too have a faith or a belief in some god or person. In the Christian context, however, faith is an action based on the accepted evidence. In other words if one accepts that the written word of God is substantially true (2 Peter 1:20-21)and that the Word of God (Jesus of Nazareth) is who he is recorded as being or is who he claims to be (John 1:1-5; 14:6-7) then faith is given substance. But I would go further and argue that authentic faith is derived from a spiritual encounter with God which then enables the recipient's faith response to be one which is prompted or ignited by God. My argument is supported from Scripture (1 Corinthians 12:9; Ephesians 2:8-9) and from personal experience. Both of the foregoing references I suggest argue that faith is a gift which has its origin in God. Hence, faith is not only prompted by God but also sustained by him. The analysis of such faith is that it is revelatory and constitutes an utter reliance on who God is and why he exists. Revelatory Faith Evangelicals argue that faith is a gift from God. However, this argument is treated with caution by others. Existentialism suggests that faith "is made possible and so granted, by the gracious approach and self-disclosure of being" . Interestingly, at this point, there is no great variance between the latter perspective and Martin Luther who argued that faith originates with, or is at least aroused, by God. Contemplating the third article of the Apostle's Creed, he wrote: I believe that I cannot of my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. Modernists, also argue that faith constitutes a person's response, but only after having been drawn to God's work of salvation. This argument suggests faith to be an a priori act of God, an act that prompts recognition that in the Christ, God is endeavouring to share his own life. This arousal of faith, then, affects worship, praise and prayer and the practise of Christian discipleship. The same argument suggests, further, that the prior love of God and the response of love that it generates are what shape a person's Christian faith. The term, “Sacrament”[1] for the Christians has haunted the Church from the emergence of the Roman Catholic Church in the third century when Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. They viewed a sacrament as a religious rite of passage, as a way of receiving God's grace. It has been and is seen by certain parts of the Church as a means by participating in or working for God’s favour. These rites of passage established by the priests of the Roman Catholic Church, have caused the faith of many to suffer shipwreck. Religious Sacraments are a set of rituals or ceremonies held by the traditional Church seen as a means of gaining God’s love and grace by conferring some specific grace upon those who receive them. The list is as follows; baptism, confirmation, communion (Eucharist), penance (confession), holy orders (setting people aside for ordination to ministry), matrimony, and the anointing of the sick. Today we may even see in the Pentecostal Church another sacrament of “the offering” in order to gain God’s grace and love. The Roman Catholic Church believes that the Sacraments ‘are the second part of God's way of salvation to us.[2]’ In addition to the previous statement the Roman Catholic Church believes, ‘that the Roman Catholic Church is the universal sacrament of salvation…, …Anticipating the Second Vatican Council, the great theologian Henri de Lubac depicted the Church as the “Sacrament of Christ”[3]’. Thus we conclude that the traditional Church view Sacraments as a way of salvation through observance of works or allegiance. It is my view that the sacraments listed in the previous paragraph as a way of receiving God's grace and love are a misnomer an inaccurate understanding of the Bible, and they are heresies, because they are used as a way of saying we can gain more grace from God by doing them, instead of doing them in remembrance, to signify a new stage in spiritual life and in obedience to a command. My understanding of the word, “heresy”, unlike the traditional Church’s view, and that is it is a teaching that conflicts with what the Bible says. You may say, “Where do you find the word, “sacrament” in Scripture? Since it is not there it is surely permissible for anyone to choose to put any interpretation on it.” My answer to that is, ‘Correct we do not find it in the Bible. But it is how the traditional Church has used this terminology and interpretation to control or even hold some in fear of not receiving salvation through justification by faith, but the questionable teaching of following some traditions to gain grace, needs to be addressed’. Therefore it is my aim in this book to show that once we see that God has chosen a person or group in each generation in Church history to bring a certain perspective to the overall theology. Each perspective was and is only a stepping stone for the next generation to stand on. We must stop thinking of doctrine as a closed door and move onto the unity of faith and not the unity of dogma. In this book we will use the canon of Scripture which is commonly known as the Protestant Canon. I have chosen this one to use as it is the oldest accepted canon. It had been accepted by the Catholic Council of Carthage, Africa in A.D. 397. The word, “Protestant” may seem to be an anachronism, since “Protestantism” per se refers to the time of the Reformation in the 13th century. If we believe a doctrine, we need to be brave enough to publish it in some form, but it is from this point onwards that it is open to investigation and possible rebuttal. But let us not shrink away from this type refutation but continue to investigate what we believe. In this book we will study what I believe is the only act that makes God happy with us and we will reflect upon what does please Him too.

"Who do you say that I am?" This question that Jesus asked of his disciples, so central to his mission, became equally central to the fledgling church. How would it respond to the Gnostics who answered by saying Jesus was less than fully human? How would it respond to the Arians who contended he was less than fully God? It was these challenges that ultimately provoked the Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325. In this volume covering the first half of the article in the Nicene Creed on God the Son, John Anthony McGuckin shows how it countered these two errant poles by equally stressing Jesus' authentic humanity (that is, his fleshliness and real embodiment in space and time) and his spiritual glory or full divinity. One cottage industry among some historical theologians, he notes, has been to live in a fever of conspiracy theory where orthodox oppressors dealt heavy-handedly with poor heretics. Or the picture is painted of ancient grassroots inclusivists being suppressed by establishment elites. The reality was far from such romantic notions. It was in fact the reverse. The church who denounced these errors did so in the name of a greater inclusivity based on common sense and common education. The debate was conducted generations before Christian bishops could ever call on the assistance of secular power to enforce their views. Establishing the creeds was not a reactionary movement of censorship but rather one concerned with the deepest aspects of quality control. Ultimately, what was and is at stake is not fussy dogmatism but the central gospel message of God's stooping "down in mercy to enter the life of his creatures and share their sorrows with them. He has lifted up the weak and the broken to himself, and he healed their pain by abolishing their alienation."
