Jacob Böhme (1575–1624) has been recognized as one of the internationally most influential German authors of the Early Modern period. Even today, his writings continue to impact fields as diverse as literature, philosophy, religion and art. Yet Böhme and his reception remain understudied. As a lay author, his works were often suppressed and circulated underground. Borrowing Böhme’s idea of “three worlds” or planes of existence, this volume traces the transmission of his thought through three stations: from his first underground readers in Central and Eastern Europe, to the Netherlands, where most of his writings were first published, to Britain, where early translations made him a popular author for generations to come. Drawing on the work of both established and younger researchers from around the world, this volume charts new territory. It fills many lacunae and reveals a number of exciting discoveries, especially regarding the production and diffusion of manuscripts and previously overlooked sites of engagement. This book will be of interest to a wide range of scholars interested in the development of philosophical, religious, literary and artistic thought from the 17th century to the present day.

Was it a whale or a shark that devoured Jonah? And how were the walls of Jericho brought down? In his wide-ranging study, Physica Sacra, Bernd Roling shows that the natural sciences and biblical exegesis have not always stood in stark opposition to one another. From the high Middle Ages, Bible commentators such as Albertus Magnus and Alonso Tostado made extensive use of the knowledge available in their times about zoology, medicine and astronomy to explain the wonders of revelation and to defend their historical basis. Even with the advent of modern Biblical criticism and in the age of Enlightenment, as is shown here in detail, their arguments were valid enough to refute critics like Spinoza, Isaac de la Peyrère and Voltaire.

Museums And Public Art written by Cher Krause Knight and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-11 with Art categories.

While many museums have ignored public art as a distinct arena of art production and display, others have – either grudgingly or enthusiastically – embraced it. Some institutions have partnered with public art agencies to expand the scope of special exhibitions; other museums have attempted to establish in-house public art programs. This is the first book to contextualize the collaborations between museums and public art through a range of essays marked by their coherence of topical focus, written by leading and emerging scholars and artists. Organized into three sections it represents a major contribution to the field of art history in general, and to those of public art and museum studies in particular. It includes essays by art historians, critics, curators, arts administrators and artists, all of whom help to finally codify the largely unwritten history of how museums and public art have and continue to intersect. Key questions are both addressed and offered as topics for further discussion: Who originates such public art initiatives, funds them, and most importantly, establishes the philosophy behind them? Is the efficacy of these initiatives evaluated in the same way as other museum exhibitions and programs? Can public art ever be a “permanent” feature in any museum? And finally, are the museum and public art ultimately at odds, or able to mutually benefit one another?

The German theologian and religious reformer, Martin Luther was the catalyst of the sixteenth century Protestant Reformation. Luther set on course a movement that reformulated the basic tenets of Christian belief, resulting in the division of Western Christendom between Roman Catholicism and the new Protestant traditions. One of the most influential figures in the history of Christianity, Luther produced a wide body of works, challenging the authority and office of the Pope by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge. His landmark translation of the Bible into the German vernacular made religion more accessible to everyday people, having a tremendous impact on both the church and German culture.
