Der kunstler-handwerker stand in der burgerlichen Ordnung wie jeder andere, schlo ins einzelne gehende Vertrage uber das, was er zu liefern und zu empfangen hatte so gar die Portionen wertvoller Farben, die er in einem Bild zu verwenden hatte, waren mitunter bestimmt wurde, wo Zunfte bestanden, von der Zunft uberwacht, da er gutes Material und gute Arbeit lieferte, und durch die Beschrankung der Zahl der Meister in seinem Brot geschutzt, in den Bau hutten vollends in eine festgefugte Gemeinschaft eingeordnet Er empfing Auftrage, die auszufuhren er gelernt hatte, und konnte Formen ubernehmen oder leicht abandern und sich ganz auf die Ausfuhrung konzentrieren. Aber auch wenn er neue erfand, war er um den Ausdruck als gelernter Meister nicht verlegen. Er erwartete von sich und die anderen erwarteten von ihm hochstens einen kleinen Schritt uber seine Vorganger hinaus. Es gab kein aus aller Kunst der Menschheit abgezogenes Ideal, an dem das Werk ge messen wurde. Die Forderungen bezogen sich uberhaupt mehr auf das Hand werkliche, gute Zutaten, sorgsame Arbeit, Dauerhaftigkeit als auf das, was wir kunstlerisch nennen. Deshalb war auch trotz der Bindungen durch den Auftraggeber, der ja oft die Kirche war, der Kunstler doch recht frei in dem, was seine Natur interessierte. This book analyzes its role and its rhetoric in Hegel, Nietzsche, Benjamin, Adorno, and Heidegger in order to account for the topic's enduring persistence.
