Das Sammeln und Präsentieren von Bildern gehörte ganz wesentlich zum Akt der Vereinnahmung Afrikas durch Europa. Ende des 19., Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts war es vor allem die Bildpostkarte, die den Menschen in der westlichen Welt eine Vorstellung vom "dunklen Kontinent" vermittelte. Die millionenfach kursierenden Karten waren das zentrale Massenmedium der visuellen Populärkultur und trugen dazu bei, die Errungenschaften imperialer Politik durchzusetzen und zu legitimieren. Der Historiker Joachim Zeller hat für diesen Band rund 400 Bilder, zumeist Postkarten aus der Sammlung Peter Weiss, ausgewählt. Sie zeigen den Afrikaner, wie ihn die Weißen sahen oder sehen wollten, als Exoten, Wilden, kolonialen Untertan oder Witzfigur. Die Aufnahmen dokumentieren nicht nur das ganze Spektrum des Kolonialismus der Bilder, sondern thematisieren ebenso die Widerständigkeiten, die Gegenblicke der Afrikaner, die - auf ihren Eigensinn beharrend - "zurückschauen" konnten. Der Autor liest die Bildpostkarten "gegen den Strich" und stellt die Darstellungen fachkundig in den historischen und ideologischen Zusammenhang. Er zeigt, wie Afrika(ner) durch den kolonialen Blick des "weißen Mannes" exotisiert, typisiert, trivialisiert, verdinglicht, für Werbezwecke oder Propaganda eingespannt wurden. Dieser Band trägt dazu bei, rassistische Wahrnehmungsmuster aufzubrechen und stellt so den aus dem Kolonialzeitalter überkommenen weißen Blick infrage.

More specifically, interrogating in a comparative analysis material ranging from mainstream satirical magazines and cartoons to literary, aesthetic, and journalistic texts, advertisements, postcards and photographs, monuments and campaign medals, ethnographic exhibitions and publications, popular entertainment, political speeches, and parliamentary reports, the book situates the short-lived but influential Zionist satirical magazine Schlemiel (1903–07) in an extensive network of nodal clusters of varying and shifting significance and with differently developed strains of cohesion or juncture that roughly encompasses the three decades from 1890 to 1920.

The last third of the 19th century witnessed a considerable increase in the active participation of women in the various Christian missions. Katharina Stornig focusses onthe Catholic case, and particularly explores the activities and experiences of German missionary nuns, the so-called Servants of the Holy Spirit,in colonial Togo and New Guinea in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. Introducing the nuns' ambiguous roles as travelers, evangelists, believers, domestic workers, farmers, teachers, and nurses, Stornig highlights the ways in which these women shaped and were shaped by the missionary encounter and how they affected colonial societies more generally. Privileging the sources produced by nuns (i.e. letters, chronicles and reports) and emphasizing their activities, Sisters Crossing Boundaries profoundly challenges the frequent depiction of women and particularly nuns as the largely passive observers of the missionizing and colonizing activities of men. Stornig does not stop at adding women to the existing historical narrative of mission in Togo and New Guinea, but presents the hopes and strategies that German nuns related to the imagination and practice of empire. She also discusses the effects of boundary-crossing, both real and imagined, in the context of religion, gender and race.

Out of the rubble of World War II and the Holocaust, the Federal Republic of Germany emerged, and with it a foundational myth of the "economic miracle." In this narrative, a new mass consumer society based on the production, export, and consumption of goods would redeem West Germany from its Nazi past and drive its rebirth as a truly modern nation. Turning this narrative on its head, Natalie Scholz shows that West Germany's consumerist ideology took shape through the reinvention of commodities previously tied to Nazism into symbols of Germany's modernity, economic supremacy, and international prestige. Postwar advertising, film, and print culture sought to divest mass-produced goods--such as the Volkswagen and modern interiors--of their fascist legacies. But Scholz demonstrates that postwar representations were saturated with unacknowledged references to the Nazi past. Drawing on a vast array of popular and highbrow publications and films, Redeeming Objects adds a new perspective to debates about postwar reconstruction, memory, and consumerism.
