How has migration shaped Mediterranean history? And what role did conflicting temporalities and the politics of departure play in the age of decolonisation? Using a microhistorical approach, Migration at the End of Empire explores the experiences of over 55,000 Italian subjects in Egypt during the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Before 1937, Ottoman-era legal regimes fostered the coupling of nationalism and imperialism among Italians in Egypt, particularly as the fascist government sought to revive the myth of Mare Nostrum. With decolonisation, however, Italians began abandoning Egypt en masse. By 1960, over 40,000 had deserted Egypt; some as 'emigrants,' others as 'repatriates,'and still others as 'national refugees.' The departed community became an emblem around which political actors in post-colonial Italy and Egypt forged new ties. Anticipated, actual, and remembered departures of Italians from Egypt are at the heart of this book's ambition to rethink European and Mediterranean periodisation.

The Peoples’ War? offers fresh approaches to the challenge of writing a new history of the Second World War. Exploring aspects of the war that have been marginalized in military and political studies, the volume foregrounds less familiar narratives, subjects, and places. Chapters recover the wartime experiences of individuals – including women, children, members of minority ethnic groups, and colonial subjects – whose stories do not fit easily into conventional national war narratives. The contributors show how terms used to delineate the conflict such as home front and battle front, occupier and occupied, captor and prisoner, and friend and foe became increasingly blurred as the war wore on. Above all, the volume encourages reflection on whether this conflict really was a “Peoples’ War.” Challenging the homogenizing narratives of the war as a nationally unifying experience, The Peoples’ War? seeks to enrich our understanding of the Second World War as a global event.

A partire da un ampio esame di fonti archivistiche largamente inedite e della storiografia su Milano e la Lombardia nel Novecento, il volume presenta la figura di Adele Bonolis (Milano, 14 agosto 1909 - 11 agosto 1980), della quale ricostruisce criticamente la formazione, la spiritualità e le opere sociali a cui ha dato vita nella seconda metà del Novecento. Il percorso di Adele Bonolis, nel quadro del cattolicesimo ambrosiano e delle molteplici realtà assistenziali che hanno da sempre caratterizzato Milano, si sviluppa all’interno dell’Azione cattolica e presso l’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, ambienti in cui matura il progetto di fondazione di un istituto di donne consacrate nel mondo, le «Aralde dell’Amore», al quale la Bonolis intendeva dar vita mentre iniziava la sua esperienza di insegnamento nella scuola. Nelle opere da lei avviate a partire dagli anni Cinquanta, rivolte a situazioni di particolare fragilità soprattutto femminile nel campo della prostituzione, del carcere e del disagio psichico, adotta un originale metodo rieducativo, con un grande rilievo nel dibattito politico e culturale dell’epoca. All’inizio degli anni Sessanta la Bonolis fonda infine l’Associazione Amicizia, per il sostegno delle sue iniziative e come comunità di perfezionamento interiore per gli aderenti.
