‘An impassioned and thorough dissection of the highly coded lexicon of so-called welfare reform…get reading, get angry, get ready’. - Professor Gargi Bhattacharyya, University of East London 'Rigorous, meticulously researched and edgy, Garrett’s new book seeks to understand the ideology underlying welfare words and by doing so, exposes the power and oppression operating through them.' - Donna Baines, University of Sydney 'An accessible and relevant call to arms to challenge inequality and social exclusion.' - Lel Meleyal, University of Sussex Welfare Words analyses the keywords and phrases commonly used by policy-makers, news-outlets and wider society, when referring to social policy, welfare reform and social work in the present-day culture of neoliberal capitalism. Examining how power relations operate through language and culture, it encourages readers to: Question how welfare words fit within a wider economic and cultural context riven with gross social inequalities Disrupt taken-for-granted meanings within mainstream social work and social policy Think more deeply, critically and politically about the incessant usage of specific words and phrases. Written by an authoritative voice in the field, Paul Michael Garrett makes sense of complex theories which codify everyday experience, giving readers vital tools to better understand and change their social worlds.

Critical Social Welfare Issues is a collection of lectures by noted social welfare experts that addresses paramount issues facing society and suggests recommendations for positive change. It is a useful handbook for social workers, psychologists, educators, health professionals, and human service administrators and a valuable text for students studying social welfare policy and social work in health care. The result of the Distinguished Lecturers Series instituted at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Critical Social Welfare Issues brings nationally recognized and outstanding social work and allied health care scholars and practitioners together for their views on topics such as: welfare reform and homelessness in the U.S. crisis in child welfare and women as victims the changing structure of African-American families the growing Hispanic population and the unique challenges they face mandatory vs. voluntary HIV testing for newborns the infrastructure of the social work profession the for-profit market system for social work and health care the future for health care professionals de-professionalization in health care professionals and the political processAs the Editors explain, Critical Social Welfare Issues addresses “the rapidly changing context in the various fields of practice of professional social work and other health care areas. The crises that are identified are newly emerging and part of a long historical process which has been exacerbated by current political and economic changes and events. . . . The threat currently seems to be coming not only from governmental political forces focused to tax reductions and right wing ideologies but for the first time from the non-government sector, the for-profit market system which is projecting huge profits from health care, education, and corrections among other social welfare arenas.”

Do contemporary welfare policies reflect the realities of the economy and the needs of those in need of public assistance, or are they based on outdated and idealized notions of work and family life? Are we are moving from a "war on poverty" to a "war against the poor?" In this critique of American social welfare policy, Sanford F. Schram explores the cultural anxieties over the putatively deteriorating "American work ethic," and the class, race, sexual and gender biases at the root of current policy and debates. Schram goes beyond analyzing the current state of affairs to offer a progressive alternative he calls "radical incrementalism," whereby activists would recreate a social safety net tailored to the specific life circumstances of those in need. His provocative recommendations include a series of programs aimed at transcending the prevailing pernicious distinction between "social insurance" and "public assistance" so as to better address the needs of single mothers with children. Such programs could include "divorce insurance" or even some form of "pregnancy insurance" for women with no means of economic support. By pushing for such programs, Schram argues, activists could make great strides towards achieving social justice, even in today's reactionary climate.

In a forward looking appraisal of the welfare state, Poverty, Welfare and the Disciplinary State examines such issues as: *the current dynamics of poverty in Britain, drawing on similar developments in Europe and the US *the major areas of social policy within which this abandonment and demonisation of the poor is taking place *the historical antecendents to this relationship between the state and the poor *the creation and expansion of a 'welfare' state that characterised the era of social democracy until the mid-1970s and from the point of view of the poor, was limited and conditional *the ideology and organisation of the New Right *the new terrain on which the struggle over the future of welfare and social policy must take place.
