Das Wilhelminische Zeitalter stand im Brennpunkt des "Aufbruchs in die Moderne". Wie verstanden der evangelische Pfarrer und liberale Politiker Friedrich Naumann (1860-1919) und seine politischen Freunde und Mitstreiter den stürmischen gesamtgesellschaftlichen Wandel in jener Zeit? Wie wurde die Deutung des Prozesses politisch ausgedrückt? Im Zentrum der Untersuchung stehen die Zukunftserwartungen des Naumann-Kreises und deren Rolle für sein politisches Handeln. Die Deutung des damaligen Modernisierungsprozesses schlug sich vor allem in den politisch-sozialen Zukunftsvorstellungen des Kreises nieder. Analysiert werden einerseits die Inhalte der Zukunftserwartungen. Dabei handelt es sich um Krisenerwartungen wie auch um Utopiebilder, d. h. Wunschbilder für eine ideale Gesellschaft. Bei der Untersuchung all dieser Zukunftserwartungen wird auch deren jeweilige zeitliche Tiefe erkennbar gemacht. Andererseits untersucht der Autor die verschiedenen Aspekte eines politischen Handelns, das darauf gerichtet war, die tiefe Kluft zwischen der bisherigen Erfahrung und der Zukunftserwartung zu überbrücken. Hier geht es also um Diagnose- und Prognoseverfahren, um die strategische Entscheidungsfindung sowie die Agitationen der Utopie. Diese themenübergreifende Untersuchung widmet sich also den konkreten Handlungsprozessen, mit denen eine erhoffte Zukunft verwirklicht und eine schreckliche vermieden werden sollte.

Since the dawn of Romanticism, artists and intellectuals in Germany have maintained an abiding interest in the gods and myths of antiquity while calling for a new mythology suitable to the modern age. In this study, George S. Williamson examines the factors that gave rise to this distinct and profound longing for myth. In doing so, he demonstrates the entanglement of aesthetic and philosophical ambitions in Germany with some of the major religious conflicts of the nineteenth century. Through readings of key intellectuals ranging from Herder and Schelling to Wagner and Nietzsche, Williamson highlights three crucial factors in the emergence of the German engagement with myth: the tradition of Philhellenist neohumanism, a critique of contemporary aesthetic and public life as dominated by private interests, and a rejection of the Bible by many Protestant scholars as the product of a foreign, "Oriental" culture. According to Williamson, the discourse on myth in Germany remained bound up with problems of Protestant theology and confessional conflict through the nineteenth century and beyond. The German Empire of 1871, although unified politically, remained deeply divided along religious lines. In German Nationalism and Religious Conflict, Helmut Walser Smith offers the first social, cultural, and political history of this division. He argues that Protestants and Catholics lived in different worlds, separated by an "invisible boundary" of culture, defined as a community of meaning. As these worlds came into contact, they also came into conflict. Smith explores the local as well as the national dimensions of this conflict, illuminating for the first time the history of the Protestant League as well as the dilemmas involved in Catholic integration into a national culture defined primarily by Protestantism. The author places religious conflict within the wider context of nation-building and nationalism. The ongoing conflict, conditioned by a long history of mutual intolerance, was an integral part of the jagged and complex process by which Germany became a modern, secular, increasingly integrated nation. Consequently, religious conflict also influenced the construction of German national identity and the expression of German nationalism. Smith contends that in this religiously divided society, German nationalism did not simply smooth over tensions between two religious groups, but rather provided them with a new vocabulary for articulating their differences. Nationalism, therefore, served as much to divide as to unite German society. Originally published in 1995.
