This volume looks at the representation of 9/11 and the resulting wars in European literature. In the face of inner-European divisions the texts under consideration take the terror attacks as a starting point to negotiate European as well as national identity. While the volume shows that these identity formations are frequently based on the construction of two Others—the US nation and a cultural-ethnic idea of Muslim communities—it also analyses examples which undermine such constructions. This much more self-critical strand in European literature unveils the Eurocentrism of a supposedly general humanistic value system through the use of complex aesthetic strategies. These strategies are in itself characteristic of the European reception as the Anglo-Irish, British, Dutch, Flemish, French, German, Italian, and Polish perspectives collected in this volume perceive of the terror attacks through the lens of continental media and semiotic theory.

So schien es nur logisch, in Afghanistan die Reifeprüfung abzulegen. Im Rahmen der Afghanistan-Diskussion forderte Bundeskanzler Schröder im Oktober 2001 die "Enttabuisierung des Militärischen" in der deutschen Außenpolitik. US-Präsident George W. Bush lobte die Deutschen mit den Worten: "Es gibt keinen standhafteren Freund in dieser Koalition als Deutschland". Doch weniger als ein Jahr später wurde aus dem Engagement auf der weltpolitischen Bühne eine Totalverweigerung. Von der "uneingeschränkten Solidarität" mit dem Verbündeten USA wollte die deutsche Bundesregierung nichts mehr wissen. Der "deutsche Weg" und das kategorische "Nein" Deutschlands zu einem Irak-Krieg werden von Beobachtern als ein tiefer "Bruch in der traditionellen bundesrepublikanischen Außenpolitik" gesehen. Robert Kagan kommt sogar zu dem Schluss: "Americans are from Mars and Europeans are from Venus: They agree on little and understand one another less and less". Die Frage, mit der sich diese Examensarbeit beschäftigt, lautet: Warum hat Deutschland im November 2001 an der Operation Enduring Freedom und dem damit verbundenen Angriff auf Afghanistan teilgenommen, nicht jedoch an der militärischen Intervention im Irak im März 2003?

The practise of outlining principles for the conduct of US security policy in so-called doctrines is a characteristic feature of US foreign policy. From an international lawyer's point of view two aspects of these doctrines are of particular interest. First, to what degree are the criteria for the use of force, as laid down in these doctrines, consistent with the limitations for the use of force in international law? Second, which law-creating effects do these doctrines have? Furthermore, the legal nature of these doctrines remains uncertain. These matters are examined, beginning with the Monroe Doctrine of 1823 and taking into account the Stimson Doctrine of 1932, the doctrines of the Cold-War period and the Bush Doctrine of 2002. The Bush Doctrine in particular has generated controversies concerning its compatibility with Article 51 of the UN Charter, due to its principle of preventive self-defence.

For many weeks, the terrorist attacks of 9/11 dominated the newspapers which covered the consequences with an unprecedented immediateness. This study looks at diverging representations of 9/11 in U.S. and German newspapers (New York Times, Washington Post, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung) and explores effects on its possible readerships. The impact of the attacks, forms of heroism, the enactment of leadership, various demonstrations of patriotism and grief as well as the textual and visual presentation of the attacks are analyzed in detail. These intermedial representations reaffirm or contest U.S. American grand narratives. While the German newspapers tend to focus on information and analysis, the U.S. papers tend to strengthen shattered U.S. American identity constructions. The study is based on nearly 2,000 newspaper articles and documents the wide scope of topics prevalent in the post-9/11 newspaper coverage.
