According to a Native American legend about the Indian Blanket flower, First Daughter Wenonah was swaddled at her birth in a beautiful blanket made by her mother. Her blanket protected her and kept her warm and safe from the cold winds, at times, across the Prairie. Wenonah's People lived in peace and harmony until another group brought an ill wind with them to the Prairie and threatened their way of life. When Wenonah's father leaves with a war party, Wenonah gives him her blanket to protect him. When Wenonah's father does not return with other members of the war party, Wenonah sets out to find him. She is vulnerable and cold without her blanket to protect her. She walks miles across the wild Prairie to find her father. When she can no further, she lies down to rest...thinking that she will die without seeing her father again. While she sleeps, wildflowers colored like her protective blanket grow and cover her, keeping her safe and warm. Wenonah wakes the next morning to see her father . They are both safe and protected because of the Indian blanket...he because he has Wenonah's blanket around him and she because the Great Spirit has rewarded her courage by spreading wildflowers like a blanket across the Prairie. Now every Spring time, the Prairie reminds us of Wenonah's love and courage with wildflowers colored like her Indian blanket.

The legend of how the Indian Blanket flower came to be. Brave Wenonah loves her mother, father, and her people. The possession she most prizes is the blanket her mother made for her to keep her safe and warm. When her father leaves for battle, Wenonah gives him her blanket for his protection. The other men return, battle-scarred and weary...but Wenonah's father is not with them. She leaves the safety of the camp to find him. She walks across the tallgrass prairie searching for him until she can walk no farther. Cold and fearful, she lies down underneath a tree to rest believing she will never see her mother and father again. She longs for the warmth and security of her blanket. During the night flowers begin to grow around her. They cover her like her beautiful blanket. When she wakes in the morning, her father is standing beside her. They marvel at the beauty of the flowers that saved Wenonah and warmed her through the night. Safe once again, they walk back to their people to tell them of the miracle of the blanket flowers. That is the legend of the Indian Blanket wildflower.

ÊWhen La Motte Cadillac first sailed up the Strait of Detroit he kept his impressions for after travelers and historians, by transcribing them in his journal. The living crystal waters of the lakes, the shores green with almost tropical profusion, the natural orchards bending their branches with fruit, albeit in a wild state, the bloom, the riotous, clinging vines trailing about, the great forests dense and dark with kingly trees where birds broke the silence with songs and chatter, and game of all kinds found a home; the rivers, sparkling with fish and thronged with swans and wild fowl, and blooms of a thousand kinds, made marvelous pictures. The Indian had roamed undisturbed, and built his temporary wigwam in some opening, and on moving away left the place again to solitude. Beside its beauty was the prospect of its becoming a mart of commerce. But these old discoverers had much enthusiasm, if great ignorance of individual liberty for anyone except the chief rulers. There was a vigorous system of repression by both the King of France and the Church which hampered real advance. The brave men who fought Indians, who struggled against adverse fortunes, who explored the Mississippi valley and planted the nucleus of towns, died one after another. More than half a century later the English, holding the substantial theory of colonization, that a wider liberty was the true soil in which advancement progressed, after the conquest of Canada, opened the lake country to newcomers and abolished the restrictions the Jesuits and the king had laid upon religion.
