German is not a language that can be acquired without steady application or without a sound knowledge of the grammatical rules, but to plunge the pupil at once into the intricacies of the grammar is both discouraging and useless. Every intelligent student would prefer to have the leading rules introduced gradually in a practical and easy manner, and it is on this principle that the present little work has been written. The following method of study is recommended: 1. The Beading Lessons should be read aloud with the teacher and the great similarity of the German and English words noted. 2. The vocabulary and grammatical rule must be learned by heart, and each exercise translated in writing; the pupil should also translate them aloud to the teacher, to accustom his ear to the sound of the language, and for this purpose it is desirable, as the pupil advances, to repeat the German portion of the lesson more rapidly. 3. After going through the first set of reading lessons they should be repeated as dictation exercises, for which they are suitable. 4. After the first few lessons, the student should form sentences for himself, with any of the words contained in the vocabulary, introducing the rules of grammar he has already learned. Words coming under the same rule have been placed together, and will afford material for additional exercises. 5. The beginner should only attempt to learn a small portion at a time of the Easy Stories given at the end of the book, to enable him to remember every word, in order to reply to the questions appended to them. These questions will give the teacher an excellent opportunity of pointing out and explaining the peculiarities of the language. 6. All substantives and adjectives in the reading lessons should be declined by the pupil; verbs should be conjugated, and the grammar practiced in every possible way, to prepare the student for Werner's Second German Course which will contain a complete grammar, a list of idioms, and a selection from the best English and German authors, with notes for translation.
