The Sorrows of Young Werther is a epistolary novel by J. W. von Goethe. First published in 1774, it reappeared as a revised edition in 1787. It was one of the most important novels in the Sturm und Drang (“Storm and Stress”) period in German literature, and influenced the later Romantic movement. The book's publication instantly placed the author among the foremost international literary celebrities, and was among the best known of his works. Goethe is, by some accounts, the father of the romantic period in literature, or at least the proto-romantic Sturm und Drang period. And The Sorrows of Young Werther was its genesis. While Voltaire parodied rationalism in Candide, Goethe transcended it with the semi-autobiographical story of Werther, a young man governed more by his emotions than his reason, whose only employment is his delight in the romantic ideals of the pastoral lives he finds in the rural town of Walheim. There he also finds Charlotte, and in her an idealized but unobtainable old-world domesticity. Werther’s internal dialog about his growing obsession with Charlotte, and his inability to cope rationally with the fact that she is engaged to—and in love with—another man, form the bulk of the book in the form of a series of ever more intense letters to a friend. Werther's descent into sorrow has captivated readers for centuries, helped by Goethe’s intensely beautiful prose, enchanting imagery, and obvious reverence for nature and a dying past.

When The Sorrows of Young Werther was published in 1774, it inspired a mass cult of feelings (and reputedly a few suicides) and made its author one of the first literary celebrities. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's story of a tormented young man whose fixation on an inaccessible woman culminates in tragedy may be read as a celebration of unfettered emotion or as a mercilessly accurate portrait of a man whose dedication to pure feeling turns him into a monster. In this translation, which is recognized as the definitive English-language version, W. H. Auden collaborated with Elizabeth mayer and Louise Bogan to capture all of Werther's soaring romanticism and moral ambiguity. It appears here with Novella, Goethe's idyll of a pastoral kingdom where the reverence for life transcends barriers of class.

A potent, touching, heart wrenching tale of love, desire and hope. ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’ is a tale composed in the form of letters from the young Werther himself, to his friend Wilhelm, documenting the pains of the emotion he feels from his unrequited love. Having fallen in love with village of Wahlheim, Werther falls hopelessly head over heels for beautiful Charlotte, a local girl who is already engaged to another man. This is a story that is familiar to all of us and indeed the author himself saying it is a creation which he "fed with the blood of my own heart", and it shows. With vivid description and characters that come to life on the page, it incorporates dramatic twists with the full scale of human emotion. It is a perfect book for anyone, because, we have all been Werther at one point. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German, poet, playwright novelist and scientist, he is to this day considered the greatest German literary figure of the modern age. He was an early leader in the ‘Sturm and Drang’ literary movement, which emphasised individual subjectivity and the freedom to express extremes of emotion, seemingly repressed by the Enlightenment. He is a figure held by philosophers and essayists as being in league with Plato, Napoleon and Shakespeare. His most notable works such as ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’ , ‘Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship’ and ‘Faust’ are to this day referred to as some of the best literary work, ever completed.

I have carefully collected whatever I have been able to learn of the story of poor Werther, and here present it to you, knowing that you will thank me for it. To his spirit and character you cannot refuse your admiration and love: to his fate you will not deny your tears. And thou, good soul, who sufferest the same distress as he endured once, draw comfort from his sorrows; and let this little book be thy friend, if, owing to fortune or through thine own fault, thou canst not find a dearer companion.

Composed almost entirely of letters written by Werther to his friend Wilhelm, The Sorrows of Young Werther is a heartbreaking narrative about a doomed love. Werther, a young artist driven more by the heart than by reason, is already enraptured with the elusive Charlotte when she marries another man better suited to her class. To keep Charlotte near, Werther befriends her husband--a bid that becomes a torturous reminder of all he's lost. Then, out of sincere pity, Charlotte can think of only one way to help free Werther from his self-destructive passion, but he has a different plan of escape. In one of the first important novels of the Sturm und Drang movement in German literature, the self-absorption of youth unites with the extremes of emotion to create a perfect storm, leaving readers shipwrecked on the shores of grief and awe. Revised edition: Previously published as The Sorrows of Young Werther, this edition of The Sorrows of Young Werther (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

The Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 leveled the city of Lisbon and surrounding areas, and killed perhaps as many as 100,000 people. It came at a decisive time in the history of western thought: the melding of Faith, Philosophy, and Science into a post-enlightenment rational view of the universe. In some sense mankind had just begun to believe he had the universe figured out when the universe struck back with a tragedy so terrible in scale it could not be fit into any box of understanding. It was not predicted. It could not have been prevented. It was not rational. And it certainly could not have been the will of a benevolent God. Lisbon was only one moment in a much larger context—industrialization was upending a pre-historic way of life, science was upending nature, and the first great republics in America and France were about to upend previously unchallenged forms of government. It was the awe, inspiration, and uncertainty of all this change that gave rise, ultimately, to Romanticism in art, literature, and music. J. W. von Goethe is, by some accounts, the father of the romantic period in literature, or at least the proto-romantic Sturm und Drang (“Storm and Stress”) period. And The Sorrows of Young Werther was its genesis. It was Goethe’s first major work, an immediate sensation upon publication, and made Goethe a household name. Werther’s descent into sorrow has captivated readers for centuries, helped by Goethe’s intensely beautiful prose (translated here by R. D. Boylan), enchanting imagery, and obvious reverence for nature and a dying past.
