The Republic of Benin is the former Republic of Dahomey. Dahomey was called after the historic kingdom of Dahomey or Abomey, conquered by the French in 1892-94. The new name given to the country on 30 November 1975 came from the Bight of Benin and the former "French Bight of Benin Settlements", themselves called after the ancient kingdom of Benin in modern Nigeria. The kingdom of Dahomey was powerful, well-organised state from the 17th century, trading extensively in slaves through the port of Whydah with the Portuguese, British and French. On the coast an educated African elite grew up in the 19th century. After the defeat of Dahomey, whose monarchy was abolished, the French occupied territory inland up to the River Niger, and created the colony of Dahomey as part of French West Africa. Subsequently, there were several African revolts, a number occurring during the First World War. The African elite protested frequently at French rule and, as African nationalism blossomed after the Second World War, Dahomey saw lively political activity and the formation of several parties. This book tells the inner story of republic of Benin Ethnic groups in details, and their relationship to one another.

Benin is a small country in West Africa, bordered by Nigeria to the east, Togo to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Formerly called Dahomey, the country achieved independence from France in 1960. Benin is known for its diverse culture, including the Yoruba, Fon, Adja, and Bariba peoples, as well as its rich history, which includes the powerful Kingdom of Dahomey, which existed from the 17th to the 19th century. The country has a mix of religions, including indigenous African religions, Christianity, and Islam, and its official language is French. Benin's economy is largely based on agriculture, with most of the population engaged in subsistence farming. Key crops include cotton, yams, cassava, and maize. The country also has some mineral resources, although they are not fully exploited. In recent years, Benin has made progress in boosting economic growth and reducing poverty, although it remains one of the poorest countries in the world.

Informal cross-border trade (ICBT) represents a prominent phenomenon in Africa. Several studies suggest that for certain products and countries, the value of informal trade may meet or even exceed the value of formal trade. This paper provides a review of existing efforts to measure informal trade. We list 18 initiatives aimed at measuring ICBT in Africa. The paper also summarizes discussions conducted with many stakeholders in Africa between December 2016 and May 2018 regarding the measurement, the determinants, and the implications of ICBT. The methodologies used to measure ICBT in Africa differ widely, but they do confirm that informal trade in Africa is both sizeable and volatile. Both evidence on the determinants of ICBT and discussions with stakeholders suggest that policies should aim to reduce the existing costs associated with formal trade and provide positive incentives for traders and producers to move into the formal economy in order to avoid the loss of economic potential stemming from informal trade.

There is currently no comprehensive study of the status of security sector governance in West Africa. Many efforts to understand governance of the security sector in Africa have been directed either at individual countries or at providing a general analysis of the state and security in Africa. This book is intended to contribute to confidence and peace-building through developing a better understanding of the challenges of security sector governance and generating practical policy recommendations based on work conducted by West African experts. It analyses the nature of security sector governance in each of the 16 West African states, provides an assessment of the effectiveness of governance mechanisms, in particular relating to democratic oversight of the security sector, and takes into account the regional and international dimensions to the issue.
