Excerpt from West-Hungary We cannot accept the so often emphasised flationalz'ty principle as sufficient cause to severe this territory from the country. The fact that its population speaks the same tongue as Austrians is no justifaction for subjecting it to Austria's rule when we consider that by the application of the self-same principle homogeneous masses of pure Hungarians amounting to four and a half millions have been transferred, like herds of cattle, or. Excerpt from Austria-Hungary: The Polyglot Empire Side by side with such matter as tends to elucidate this paramount object, there also appears information in the body of this book which may interest the reader for its own sake. A good deal of it rests on the personal im pressions of the writer. Some readers may like the book the better for that. One more remark. I think I may honestly claim for myself to be actuated by no conscious bias in dealing with political, social and racial questions discussed here. Cer tainly none has swayed my judgment in looking towards ultimate ends. The political reforms urgently called for, both in Hungary and Austria, to bring those two coun tries abreast of the times, abreast of the West, are not subject to opinion; they are demanded by the facts them selves. Neither has my sincere liking for and sympathy with the people of austria-hungary blinded me to their serious failings; failings, however, which, nearly all of them, do more harm to themselves than to others. On its first appearance, Hungarian critics of every school at once hailed it as a masterpiece. It has maintained its popularity ever since; and now, despite the manifold mutations of literary fashion, in Hungary as elsewhere, has reached the un assailable position of a national classic. Excerpt from Hungary Before, During and After the Great War The satisfaction of the demands made upon Hun gary by the neighbouring peoples, constitutes one of the many problems to be solved at the Peace Con ference. It lies not only in the interest of Hungary, but in that 'of the whole civilized world, that Hungary retains its territory untouchal and has an open way to the sea, with the control of its old sea-port Fiume. In view of the fact that the' enemies of Hun gary are putting forth their utmost efforts to convince the Great Powers of the West of their pretended rights, it is here of supreme importance to give an explanation in accordance with the facts, if it be only a brief sketch, and this is all the more necessary, since it is those Powers against whom we were obliged to fight, who 'are now to decide the fate of Hungary. It is, or should be, impossible, for the fate of Hungary to be decided by hate and enmity, but rather in harmony with the general peace of the nations. For this reason, it'is essential for one to form a perfectly clear idea as to the part really played by Hungary in the Great, War. Excerpt from The Hungarian Exiles This story is based upon characters and inci dents in. The eleventh century: Bela I., afterwards King of Hungary, and his two sons, Geyza and Ladislaus, being the central figures of the tale. The unselfish natures of the two brothers, and their devoted attachment to each other through all vicis situdes, form one of the unique traditions of the mediaeval age. I have chosen the period of their father's exile-life in Poland, where they were born and reared, to fabricate a possible picture of their boyhood, surrounding them with in uences most probable to account for the character history ascribes to them as Hungarian heroes. Excerpt from The Hungarian Castle, Vol. 1 of 3 The month of December, 183 had set in with extreme rigour, and was only yet half Spent, when a deep and persevering fall of snow compelled a numerous party, collected under the hospitable roof of an Hungarian magnate, Whose stately castle occupied an elevated site on the confines of Tran sylvania, to prolong their visit far beyond its in tended duration. The circumstance was not, how ever, calculated to excite serious regret, for the host had-gathered together much of the beauty and chivalry of his high-hearted country proud names and bright eyes were there; and light spirits, and happy natures Well disposed to scatter roses along the path of time, and to laugh at chance, as it usurped the control of their movements.
