Der Wind trug Hufschlag herüber. Kane verstaute die Blechtasse in seiner Satteltasche. Sein Lagerplatz befand sich in der Nähe einer kleinen Baumgruppe. Mindestens einer dieser Bäume war vollkommen verdorrt. Kane hatte seinen Braunen dort festgemacht. Seine Winchester steckte im Sattelschuh, dem Scubbard, den er zusammen mit dem restlichen Sattelzeug, den Taschen, seiner Decke und dem alten Militärmantel zwischen den knorrigen Wurzeln abgelegt hatte. Kanes instinktiver Griff ging zu dem tiefgeschnallten Revolverholster. Links trug er ein Bowiemesser am Gürtel. Die schwarze Lederweste war staubbedeckt. Er schob den Hut ein Stück in den Nacken. Die vier Reiter hielten direkt auf ihn zu. Wer hätte das gedacht!, ging es ihm durch den Kopf. Ein Begrüßungskomitee, das mich bereits zwanzig Meilen vor San Antonio abfängt!
