Excerpt from Study of Alternatives: Western Pennsylvania Region: Its Landscape, People, and Industry In November 1992, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation Commission, acting under the authority of Public Law 100-698, requested that the National Park Service, Partnerships Branch, undertake four studies of the iron and steel, coal and coke, glass, and aluminum industries in the western Pennsylvania region. The studies were to evaluate the resource bases related to these four industries and develop viable alternatives for their conservation, use, and interpretation. Close coordination with state and local partners, both public and private, was considered vital to the successful completion of these planning efforts. The study team determined that the diverse stories of the political, social, and economic development of western Pennsylvania would guide the methodology of data collection for the resource inventory. The region's industrial heritage cannot be understood completely without some appreciation of the other significant chapters in its history. The stories of the brutal warfare of the colonial era, the explosive American expansion in the early 19th century, the technological advances in transportation, as well as the rise of American industry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reinforce the fact that the region's role as a vital crossroads and rich resource base remained remarkably consistent over time. The stories of these events, combined with many of the region's resources, would give visitors a clearer understanding of how the evolution of one region can alter the history of an entire nation. The conflict between the Jeffersonian and Hamiltonian concepts of democracy was nowhere more vigorous or bitter than in Western Pennsylvania during the period when the region evolved from an agrarian to an industrial economy. This book traces the political aspects of this transformation step by step. The region's long allegiance to Jeffersonianism, was in part due to a group of plodding but shrewd politicians who remained in power until well after the War of 1812, before they were succeded by Hamiltonians. Ferguson profiles the major politicians and political events in the region from Revolutionary War times until the 1820s.

Pennsylvania has been home to many world-changing events over the years, from the Declaration of Independence to the discovery of the polio vaccine, to the creation of the Big Mac. However, you could argue that few, if any, of these had as large an impact as what occurred in northwestern Pennsylvania in late August of 1859. Oil was known to exist in northwestern Pennsylvania for hundreds of years. Over that time, Native Americans had been collecting oil from seeps in the ground along Oil Creek and passed that knowledge onto settlers to the area. This book profiles the history of Pennsylvania oil from its discovery and development to its impact on the culture, economy, and environment of the oil region. These vintage postcards provide a glimpse into the wide-ranging history of western Pennsylvania's oil region, from the cradle of the industry at Oil Creek to the immensely productive Bradford oil field, and on to cities and towns like Oil City, built largely by the black gold.

The Early Architecture Of Western Pennsylvania written by Charles Morse Stotz and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-13 with Architecture categories.

A new edition of this long unavailable classic reproduces photographic prints made from original negatives and features an extensive analytical introduction by the noted architectural historian Dell Upton. Before the 1936 publication of The Early Architecture of Western Pennsylvania, the architectual heritage of a region prominent in the history of early America had been almost totally neglected. Based on a four-year survey conducted by the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Istitute of Architects, Charles Morse Stotz's book provides the definitive description and analysis of structures ranging from log houses to colonial and Georgian structures to examples of the pre-Civil War Gothic revival. The volume defines the local architectural idiom as an expression of the frontier and early industrial societies that played such an important part in the history of nineteenth century America. This oversized volume of 416 black-and-white photographs, 81 measured drawings and an extensive text presents a splendid array of early dwellings, barns, and other outbuildings, churches, arsenals, banks, inns, commercial buildings, tollhouses, mills, and even tombstones. Time has proved this work to be the definitive record of an architectural heritage that was fast disappearing with the economic boom of World War II and the postwar years. The Early Architecture of Western Pennsylvania is also a work of precision, beauty, and integrity. The drawings ignore alterations made after 960 and shoe the buildings in their original condition, giving special attention to details such as window sashes, shutters, cornices, and roofs. The floor plan of each structure is included, and line drawings display the profiles of moldings and ornamentation. Signature stones and hardware convey the quality of the early craftsmen's work. In all cases, stone joining has been faithfully drawn, joint for joint, to record the charm of old wall patterns. This new edition makes a landmark book available to a new generation of readers - one especially aware of the importance of architectural preservation and guarding the history of the Western Pennsylvania region.
