Chalan beel is one of the largest wetlands of Bangladesh. It is located between 24 05 to 24 35 N latitude and 89 to 89 35 E longitude. The beel extends over four adjacent areas of Rajshahi, Pabna, Sirajgonj and Natore districts of Bangladesh. The previous area of the beel of about 108,800 ha. has been reduced to about 36,800 ha. Chalan beel is a seasonally deeply flooded area and as a consequence, a large amount of silt is deposited over there. The texture of the Chalan beel soils varied from silty clay to clay. The pH of the soils increased during the last three decades and varied from 6.2 to 7.2. The organic matter contents declined and varied from low to moderate status. Total N also decreased over time and ranged from 0.04 to 0.17%. C/N ratio of the studied pedons is moderate. CEC of the Chalan beel soils also decrease over time. Mica was the dominant mineral of the Chalan beel soils which was 40%. The second abundant mineral was kaolinite which was 9%. Chalan beel soils have been characterized as hydromorphic where gleization is thought to be the dominant pedogenic process and for classification the soils meet the requirements of the Inceptisol order of the US Soil Taxonomy."

The book is concerned with the spatio-temporal changes of wetlands (haor, baor, khals, beels, marshy lands etc) from 1990 to 2004 and to identify and assess the causes and impact of wetlands changes at a micro level in Daulatpur Upazila of Manikganj district which is a low-lying flood prone deltaic plain area of Bangladesh. This study based on both secondary information and a structural questionnaire. To accomplish the research, Landsat TM image of 1990 and Landsat TM image of 2004 were analyzed by ERDAS IMAGINE 8.4. Besides, ArcView 3.3 and Arc GIS 9.2 have been used for essential map produce. The factors responsible for wetlands changes in the study area are riverbank erosion, flood and sedimentation, expansion of human settlement, urbanization, industrialization, unplanned development activities, overexploitation, agricultural practices and climate change. Based on these findings, a number of guidelines and strategies have been put forward for sustainable wetlands management in Bangladesh.

Property right decentralization has an utmost importance in community based natural resource management. In many developing countries, public participation in natural resource governance is hindered by the poor property right decentralization policy. Moreover, the natural resource dependent rural communities cannot take collective action to achieve the decentralized property right due to the lacking of their capital assets. The opportunists utilize these national policy and social shortcomings for their own betterment. Consequently, the objective of community development through sustainable use of natural resources always remains unachieved. In this book, the authors concentrated on these issues to reveal the wetland property right decentralization mechanism and collective action of fishermen communities of north-eastern part of Bangladesh. They concluded that the existing property right decentralization mechanism is not supportive to include the real resource dependent people in the resource ownership regime.

One of the poorest and most densely populated nations in the world, Bangladesh is also arguably the most vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change. Increased salinity of soils in coastal regions as well as increased incidence and severity of cyclones and other natural disasters lend credence to the argument that the impacts of climate change are already here. Thus, Bangladesh must struggle in its efforts toward poverty alleviation and food security, and build a foundation of resilience to ensure gains made today can be sustained into the future. Increasingly, Bangladesh government officials and civil society recognize the importance of a healthy and integrated protected area system as a fundamental building block in its foundation of resilience. An integrated protected area system ensures that forests and wetlands are managed to conserve and sustain key environmental services--especially the provision of a stable supply of water--into the future. Based on the principles of co-management, government and communities are working together to ensure conservation of existing protected areas, to demonstrate the development benefits of conservation of protected areas, and to expand this network in size and complexity through the Nishorgo Network. This book is a contribution to strengthening co-management of Bangladesh's protected area system. Papers in this volume are based on research funded as part of the Nishorgo Network's Integrated Protected Area Co-Management (IPAC) program. Research funds were allotted to government officers from various departments, as well as to one research fellow from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), to support site-specific research pertaining to issues of co-management initiatives implemented by IPAC in wetlands and forests of Bangladesh. It is expected that the research findings reported in this book will illuminate new directions for policy and implementation strategies for creating arrangements that meet the goals of co-management through participation and governance, livelihoods and resources. Spending time to investigate the realities of local resource users in both wetland and forest environments will help in tailoring comanagement initiatives launched in association with the Government of Bangladesh and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and with the formal involvement of local communities.--p.[4] of cover.

In the coastal wetlands, the Sunderbans mangrove swamp alone contributes a remarkable economic return in terms of timber, fisheries and other non-wood forest products. The annual production of shells is approximately 3,330,000 kg, and an estimated 1,850,000 kg of honey and 44,400 kg of wax are extracted annually. During 1992-1993, the export value of Mud Crab from the Sunderbans was Tk3,780,000. Over-emphasis on flood protection, drainage and irrigation rather than on integrated water development and management on the one hand and the lack of community participation in the wetland conservation areas on the other were identified as the problems for wetland management and sustainable development in Bangladesh.
