Man Or Citizen written by Karen Pagani and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-19 with Philosophy categories.

The French studies scholar Patrick Coleman made the important observation that over the course of the eighteenth century, the social meanings of anger became increasingly democratized. The work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau is an outstanding example of this change. In Man or Citizen, Karen Pagani expands, in original and fascinating ways, the study of anger in Rousseau’s autobiographical, literary, and philosophical works. Pagani is especially interested in how and to what degree anger—and various reconciliatory responses to anger, such as forgiveness—functions as a defining aspect of one’s identity, both as a private individual and as a public citizen. Rousseau himself was, as Pagani puts it, “unabashed” in his own anger and indignation—toward society on one hand (corrupter of our naturally good and authentic selves) and, on the other, toward certain individuals who had somehow wronged him (his famous philosophical disputes with Voltaire and Diderot, for example). In Rousseau’s work, Pagani finds that the extent to which an individual processes, expresses, and eventually resolves or satisfies anger is very much of moral and political concern. She argues that for Rousseau, anger is not only inevitable but also indispensable, and that the incapacity to experience it renders one amoral, while the ability to experience it is a key element of good citizenship.

Making It Like a Man: Canadian Masculinities in Practice is a collection of essays on the practice of masculinities in Canadian arts and cultures, where to “make it like a man” is to participate in the cultural, sociological, and historical fluidity of ways of being a man in Canada, from the country’s origins in nineteenth-century Victorian values to its immersion in the contemporary post-modern landscape. The book focuses on the ways Canadian masculinities have been performed and represented through five broad themes: colonialism, nationalism, and transnationalism; emotion and affect; ethnic and minority identities; capitalist and domestic politics; and the question of men’s relationships with themselves and others. Chapters include studies of well-known and more obscure figures in the Canadian arts and culture scenes, such as visual artist Attila Richard Lukacs; writers Douglas Coupland, Barbara Gowdy, Simon Chaput, Thomas King, and James De Mille; filmmakers Clement Virgo, Norma Bailey, John N. Smith, and Frank Cole; as well as familiar and not-so-familiar tokens of Canadian masculinity such as the hockey hero, the gangsta rapper, the immigrant farmer, and the drag king. Making It Like a Man is the first book of its kind to explore and critique historical and contemporary masculinities in Canada with a special focus on artistic and cultural production and representation. It is concerned with mapping some of the uniquely Canadian places and spaces in the international field of masculinity studies, and will be of interest to academic and culturally informed audiences.

Volume 8: Florence Nightingale on Women, Medicine, Midwifery and Prostitution makes available a great range of Florence Nightingale’s work on women: her pioneering study of maternal mortality in childbirth (Introductory Notes on Lying-in Institutions), her opposition to the regulation of prostitution through the Contagious Diseases Acts (attempts to stop the legislation and otherwise to facilitate the voluntary treatment of syphilitic prostitutes), her views on gender roles, marriage and measures for income security for women and excerpts from her draft (abandoned) novel. There is correspondence with women friends and colleagues from childhood to old age, on a vast range of subjects. Correspondents include old family friends, royal and notable personages, nuns and colleagues in various causes. Most of this material has not been published before and some letters wil be new even to Nightingale scholars. Altogether a very different view of Nightingale emerges from what normally appears in biographies and other secondary sources. This material will enable a new assessment of her feminism, her relations with women and her contribution to improving the status of women of her time. Currently, Volumes 1 to 11 are available in e-book version by subscription or from university and college libraries through the following vendors: Canadian Electronic Library, Ebrary, MyiLibrary, and Netlibrary.

“In the history of the Catholic Church no Pope can compete with John Paul II in the sheer number of Apostolic visits to the followers of Christ living in Diaspora among different nations and races, various cultural and religious communities. St. John’s “we believe in love” (I John 4:16) and St. Paul’s “love of Christ urges us” (II Cor 5:14) compels John Paul II to make so many pilgrimages throughout the world in order to bring contemporary man closer to Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate foundation in creating One Family of Man in God. In response to his spiritual concern for the well-being of—not only the faithful—but all men of good will, people have expressed their gratitude to Pope John Paul II in manifold ways: from a pig offered by Papuans during his visit to New Guinea, to statues and monuments constructed in other visited places.” —From the Preface

"Very few of the titles, whether fiction or non, take a serious analytical look at the "Bible" as a biblical scholar or theologian would. This is where "God's Inferno" differs from the majority. It utilizes logical, rational, reasoning to analyze what that Bible actually says, not what most have been lead to believe. It seriously attacks the present Christian faith as their tenants and doctrines are based on a very faulty interpretation of what the Bible actually says. It maintains, and proves, the god of the Old Testament is not the 'Supreme God', but merely what the Jewish people of Israel pictured their god to be. Naturally, if he is not the Supreme God, then Jesus is not the Son of that Supreme God but may have been the son of that hateful, murderous, vengeful god of the Old Testament. From the founding of Christianity, it traces its impact through the first 1500-1600 years of the Catholic Church, the keepers of the faith during that time. It documents the Crusades, the Inquisitions and the Reformation as well as the many married priests, Popes who fathered children, and under aged leading fathers of the Church. Finally, it attempts to motivate the indifferent Christian to utilize his God given mind to seriously think about what they actually believe and to conduct their lives according to that belief."

Christianity Exposed written by G. A. Hedtke and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-06 with Religion categories.

Christianity Exposed presents an overall picture of God's work, plan, and the marrow of Christianity, supported by the Bible without religion's interference. Perspectives of disharmony and love may touch a reader's emotions, and they can empathize with story situations, social problems, and world problems. Perceptions about how the world operates are enhanced. This book traces mankind's development and how God uses nature and evil for his purpose. It questions why God allows evil and pain in this world from numerous outlooks, intending to explain away confusing arguments people may hear that could hinder their understanding or belief. It doesn't dwell on the specific problems of the world but explains why they exist, to see why the world is as it is. The author presents biblical observations and new descriptions for understanding Christianity. He discusses the spiritual world. The book describes how religion affects Christians' lives and how they live toward their beliefs. Readers will gain a solid understanding of doctrine and have common questions answered. They will deepen their understanding of how Christianity is a relationship. This is a well-documented, fresh work for Christians that also lets outsiders see what the religion is.
