Social distancing is a term used for such measures that Health authorities take to discourage or delay the spread of a highly infectious disease. The Health Official has the legislative power to introduce steps to isolate society as these initiatives would have a direct effect on our society. Any effort to implement social distancing initiatives must be orchestrated with local authorities such as communities, police forces, and education centers, as well as with state and federal stakeholders. The statutory health bodies are responsible for collecting information on social distancing to physically separate the public from society. This knowledge is provided to help people understand what might be expected to do if social distancing strategies are put into action by the Health Advisor. What are the steps to separate people from society? Social distancing measures are taken to limit when and where the spread of communicable diseases can be prevented or decelerated.

The health and economic consequences of COVID-19 are closely tied to individual compliance with recommended protective behaviors. We examine the determinants of this compliance using survey data from the COVID Behavior Tracker for 29 advanced and emerging market economies between March and December 2020. Social distancing behaviors vary significantly by age, gender, occupation, and individual beliefs about COVID-19. In addition, those who trust their government’s response to COVID-19 are significantly more likely to adopt recommended behaviors and to self-isolate if advised, highlighting the need for well-coordinated actions on the health and economic fronts. We also find that mobility restrictions, such as stay-at-home orders, and mask mandates are associated with reduced social interactions and persistent increases in compliance. Together, these drivers account for over two-thirds of the regional differences in compliance, confirming their important role in increasing social distancing and containing the pandemic.

We explore how social network exposure to COVID-19 cases shapes individuals' social distancing behavior during the early months of the ongoing pandemic. We work with de-identified data from Facebook to show that U.S. users whose friends live in areas with worse coronavirus outbreaks reduce their mobility more than otherwise similar users whose friends live in areas with smaller outbreaks. The effects are quantitatively large: a one standard deviation increase in friend-exposure to COVID-19 cases early in the pandemic results in a 1.2 percentage point increase in the probability that an individual stays home on a given day. As the pandemic progresses, changes in friend-exposure drive changes in social distancing behavior. Given the evolving nature and geography of the pandemic -- and hence friend-exposure -- these results rule out many alternative explanations for the observed relationships. We also analyze data on public posts and membership in groups advocating to "reopen" the economy to show that our findings can be explained by friend-exposure raising awareness about the risks of the disease and inducing individuals to participate in mitigating public health behavior.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has become a worldwide concern for consumers, businesses, and public policy makers. Social distancing is now a top consideration for consumers when deciding where and how to shop, which reduces their willingness to shop in physical stores with others who may carry the virus. In this paper, we use a game-theoretic model to analyze how consumers' preference for social distancing affects store profits, consumer surplus, social welfare, and the equilibrium spread of COVID-19 among consumers when they, along with stores and online delivery platform, strategically respond to social distancing. We find that the preference for social distancing 1) decreases store profits in a monopoly but can increase them in a duopoly, 2) strictly benefits the delivery platform, and 3) weakly decreases consumer surplus and social welfare in both a monopoly and a duopoly. Meanwhile, the preference for social distancing reduces the spread of COVID-19 by reducing store traffic, but this positive effect only arises when stores sell online through their own channels. When stores sell online through a third-party platform, consumers' preference for social distancing does not affect the spread of COVID-19 amongst shoppers. Moreover, we find that, while facilitating delivery services can be ineffective in reducing the spread of COVID-19, subsidizing online shopping and regulating third-party platforms can help contain the virus.
