How all philosophical explanations of human consciousness and the fundamental structure of the cosmos are bizarre—and why that’s a good thing Do we live inside a simulated reality or a pocket universe embedded in a larger structure about which we know virtually nothing? Is consciousness a purely physical matter, or might it require something extra, something nonphysical? According to the philosopher Eric Schwitzgebel, it’s hard to say. In The Weirdness of the World, Schwitzgebel argues that the answers to these and other fundamental questions about the world and our existence lie beyond our powers of comprehension. We can be certain only that the truth—whatever it is—is weird. Two strangers, no-nonsense Michael and high-maintenance Jessica, have an unfortunate incident involving orange juice while boarding a plane. Later, while in midflight, an explosion aboard the plane sends it plummeting down toward the ground and certain death. However, Michael and Jessica don't die. They awaken in a strange place called Control, where they are met by a kindly old gentleman named Jacob. He informs them that they will shortly be sent off, courtesy of an all-powerful transporter, to a randomly selected Earth-like planet somewhere in the far-off universe. Upon reaching the new planet, the pair nearly die from exposure, hunger, and thirst. They are rescued by a huge hundred-plus-pound pussycat who leads them to shelter, food, and water. The cat, who they name Millie, becomes their constant companion and shares in all the couple's adventures and misadventures. While the three companions explore the mysterious planet, Michael and Jessica are constantly tormented by the absurdity of their apparent role of Adam and Eve on this uninhabited world. They wonder, Why them? They also wonder if, by some miracle, they could possibly return to Earth. Such a miracle seems extremely far-fetched except that, during his explorations inside the massive mountain that has become their home, computer-savvy Michael discovers what appears to be a gigantic transporter, very similar to the one on Control.

In November 12, 2002, Dr. John Chambers of the NASA Ames Research Center gave a seminar to the Astrobiology Group at the University of Washington. The audience of about 100 listened with rapt attention as Chambers described results from a computer study of how planetary systems form. The goal of his research was to answer a deceptively simple question: How often would newly forming planetary systems produce Earth-like planets, given a star the size of our own sun? By “Earth-like” Chambers meant a rocky planet with water on its surface, orbiting within a star’s “habitable zone. ” This not-too-hot and not-too-cold inner region, relatively close to the star, supports the presence of liquid water on a planet surface for hundreds of million of years—the time-span probably necessary for the evolution of life. To answer the question of just how many Earth-like planets might be spawned in such a planetary system, Chambers had spent thousands of hours running highly sophisticated modeling programs through arrays of powerful computers. The results presented at the meeting were startling. The simulations showed that rocky planets orbiting at the “right” distances from the central star are easily formed, but they can end up with a wide range of water content. Earth seems to be quite a gem—a rocky planet where not only can liquid water exist for long periods of time, but where water can be found as a heathy oceanful—not too little and not too much. Our planet seems to reside in a benign region of the Galaxy, where comet and asteroid bombardment is tolerable and habitable-zone planets can commonly grow to Earth size. Such real estate in our galaxy—perhaps in any galaxy—is prime for life. And rare as well.
