Understanding Your Game A Mathematician S Advice For Rational And Safe Gambling written by Catalin Barboianu and has been published by PhilScience Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-15 with Mathematics categories.

Dr. Cătălin Bărboianu, a recognized authority in gaming mathematics, philosopher of science, and problem-gambling researcher, proposes in this practical guide for both problem and non-problem gamblers a new pragmatic, conceptual approach of gambling mathematics. The primary aim of this guide is the adequate understanding of the essence and complexity of gambling through its mathematical dimension. The author starts from the premise that formal gambling mathematics, which is hardly even digestible for the non-math-inclined gamblers, is ineffective alone in correcting the specific cognitive distortions associated with gambling. By applying the latest research results in this field, the author blends the gambling-mathematics concepts with the epistemology of applied mathematics and cognitive psychology for providing gamblers the knowledge required for rational and safe gambling. It is not a standard book of gambling mathematics. The essential mathematical concepts are explained in a conceptual mode for the non-math reader, limited to their context of application and including their precise relationship with the real world of gambling. The entire mathematical dimension of gambling is reduced to seven general principles, explained at large in the seven main chapters, each generating a set of general recommendations applicable in general or in particular situations. These recommendations cover both the technical play, including objective and optimal strategies, and responsible, safe gambling. The guide has entire sections dedicated to roulette, blackjack, slots, poker, and sport betting; however, the principles and the associated advice are applicable in general to all games of chance. A major focus of the work is on explaining, making aware of, demounting, and correcting the classical gambling cognitive distortions (misconceptions, subjective estimations of probabilities, the Monte Carlo fallacy, conjunction and disjunction fallacies, the near-miss effect, illusion of control, and the misunderstanding of gambling language). The guide provides the required cognitive tools for correcting these distortions with the help of the mathematical concepts and addresses not only gamblers, but also gambling experts, including counselors.

'Will Storr is one of our best journalists of ideas ... The Status Game might be his best yet' James Marriott, Books of the Year, The Times What drives our political and moral beliefs? What makes us like some things and dislike others? What shapes how we behave, and misbehave, in groups? What makes you, you? For centuries, philosophers and scholars have described human behaviour in terms of sex, power and money. In The Status Game, bestselling author Will Storr radically turns this thinking on its head by arguing that it is our irrepressible craving for status that ultimately defines who we are. From the era of the hunter-gatherer to today, when we exist as workers in the globalised economy and citizens of online worlds, the need for status has always been wired into us. A wealth of research shows that how much of it we possess dramatically affects not only our happiness and wellbeing but also our physical health - and without sufficient status, we become more ill, and live shorter lives. It's an unconscious obsession that drives the best and worst of us: our innovation, arts and civilisation as well as our murders, wars and genocides. But why is status such an all-consuming prize? What happens if it's taken away from us? And how can our unquenchable thirst for it explain cults, moral panics, conspiracy theories, the rise of social media and the 'culture wars' of today? On a breathtaking journey through time and culture, The Status Game offers a sweeping rethink of human psychology that will change how you see others - and how you see yourself.

“The Pro Tour’s hottest coach” (Golf Digest) distills the lessons of a private strategy session into an indispensable “soft skills” companion. Credited with transforming the short games of world-class golfers like Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Annika Sorenstam, and Yani Tseng, Dave Stockton is one of the most sought-after coaches in golf. Yet Stockton’s natural abilities are more like the average player’s than those of most tour superstars. Not particularly long off the tee and average in terms of ballstriking, Stockton has won multiple major championships through a willingness to set his ego aside and analyze his game objectively—precisely what make him so effective as an instructor. The hallmark of Stockton’s coaching is the idea that “trying doesn’t work.” He shows students how to get out of their own way and let their subconscious take over. In Own Your Game, Stockton recreates the experience of riding eighteen holes with him at one of his highly sought-after corporate outings. He explains how any player can learn to use his or her mind effectively—both in the microcosm of the shot at hand and in plotting a way through a round. Amateur golfers are tired of trying to imitate the swings of the pros—to mostly disastrous results. Stockton gives players the tools and the freedom to play better with the swing they currently have. Portable, conversational, practical—and complete with a mini-guide to playing business golf with colleagues and clients—Own Your Game shows how players at all levels can master the all-important mental game.

Long has it been thought that injuries are an end product of sports participation. From youth sport to elite dominance, the innate behavioural process of what it takes to identify between fact and opinion is brought forward to discern between truth and fabrications. The scientific undertone remains steady in its varied shapes as the sport of tennis is used to deliver a new road forward. Steps are identified to combat the injury crisis — from the elite playing group to youth activity rates with the elite granted years at their peak and how adolescent athletes can cross the threshold in the years to come. A player’s technical proponents are laid bare with strengths, weaknesses and most telling, how to win against the best players in the world. In doing so, a much broader scale of impact sits on the cusp of change by incepting micro communities around the world. From increasing the rate of participation, removing the risk of technical injury whilst delivering a healthier, active and more robust population isn’t the only benefit. When it comes to the one-percenters of the elite, a new identifier in the golden rule not only weighs in on the role of a player’s relationship to the top, but perhaps the most substantial finding this decade: replicated success — to win more than one Grand Slam Championship. And tennis is only the beginning.

America's children are joining and quitting youth sports in record numbers. If kids can't find the fun in an activity, they may try to find the way out. Through a combination of advice from more than 100 elite athletes and time-tested sports psychology concepts, Raising Your Game prompts parents to consider what really matters when it comes to their kids and sports. From LeBron James to Shannon Miller, Brandi Chastain to Jason Taylor, John Smoltz to Mary Joe Fernandez, Sanya Richards-Ross to Torii Hunter, athletes from across the sports spectrum discuss their setbacks and successes what worked for them and what didn't. Raising Your Game discusses the types of guidance that can ignite inspiration and foster participation, practice, and progress, and which methods can create frustration and dejection.
