CHAPTER II Death, Misfortune And Hardship HAVING reached Northern Russia, where our beleaguered Allies and our own handful of sailors were driving back the Bolsheviki against heavy odds, the Americans were not long to remain in the city of Archangel. In fact, it was only a matter of days until they were fighting actual battles with the Red Army. The story of this strange warfare throughout the long x ctic winter and extending far into the spring--long after the signing of the armistice-- should not be undertaken without consideration of the difficulties that beset us from the start. While we did not know early in September why we had been sent there, the story current in our camps was that the expedition had been decreed direct by the Supreme Allied Council, of which Marshal Foch was the head. Gen. Poole, our British Commander in Chief, so the story ran, had been before the council after having been designated by the British War Office for the leadership. He was an experienced soldier and regarded as an adept in Russian affairs. In Russia nothing was American. Even with American units fighting, they had taken away our American weapons. When we arrived in Russia they had redressed the soldiers of our unit until one couldn't tell whether they were English, Russian, Lithuanian or Polish. Our command was quickly scattered. The rushing off of the troops down the Vologda railroad and the River Dvina began almost as soon as we arrived in Archangel. September 7 our boats were moved across the Dvina to Bakharitza, the Brooklyn of Archangel, and the first to debark was the 3d Battalion under Major Charles G. Young. It was composed of Companies I, K, L and M. The men were then loaded onto a train of Russian boxcars, hauled by a queer looking wood...

IN a small book about Russia, written when the war was at its height, I undertook a brief survey of the history of Anglo-Russian relations from the sixteenth century, when they were first inaugurated, to the Intervention, when they temporarily ceased, in order to indicate, very lightly, certain lessons which could be learnt with profit for the future. The future, by which I then meant the end of the war in Europe and Asia, is now the present, and the lessons have not been learnt. They will not be repeated here and I refer to that earlier book only because it has a direct bearing on this one, which is neither more nor less than an attempt to produce a picture of the Russian people, their culture, and their political ideas, against the back ground of the unchanging conditions of their landscape and their climate. Something of this kind seems to me badly needed to serve as a firm anchorage for our thoughts and speculations about the impact of Russia upon the rest of the world. In that earlier book, after considering the monotonous and gloomy regularity with which the birth and recurrent rebirth of good-will between our two countries has been succeeded by the resurrection of suspicion, hardening quickly into hostility, open or concealed, and after some attempt to suggest reasons for this dire and inflexible rhythm, I tried to show that if we were not very careful we should find the same thing happening at the end of the war which then seemed a long way off, and I went on to suggest that one of the first steps we could take to strengthen ourselves against the inevitable shock of disillusion ment to come was to disillusion ourselves a little in advance and try to think of the Russians as ordinary human beings instead of as a nation of masked demigods. I was writing in 1943, shortly after the victory at Stalingrad, when the agitation for the so-3 4 Russia and the Russians called Second Front was at its height both in Moscow and in London, and when we, the average Englishman or American, were extending to Russia a warmth and passion of admiration unprecedented in the history of alliances. Nothing Russia did was wrong nothing we did was right. To return from Moscow to London at that time was an odd and unmanageable experience...

In 1917, Bolshevik revolutionaries overthrew the tsar of Russia and established a new, communist government, one that viewed the Imperial Russia of old as a righteously vanquished enemy. And yet, as Pavel Khazanov shows, after the collapse of Stalinism, a reconfiguration of Imperial Russia slowly began to emerge, recalling the culture of tsarist Russia not as a disgrace but as a glory, a past to not only remember but to recover, and to deploy against what to many seemed like a discredited socialist project. Khazanov's careful untangling of this discourse in the late Soviet period reveals a process that involved figures of all political stripes, from staunch conservatives to avowed intelligentsia liberals. Further, Khazanov shows that this process occurred not outside of or in opposition to Soviet guidance and censorship, but in mainstream Soviet culture that commanded wide audiences, especially among the Soviet middle class. Excavating the cultural logic of this newly foundational, mythic memory of a "lost Russia," Khazanov reveals why, despite the apparently liberal achievement of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Boris Yeltsin (and later, Vladamir Putin) successfully steered Russia into oligarchy and increasing autocracy. The anti-Soviet memory of the pre-Soviet past, ironically constructed during the late socialist period, became and remains a politically salient narrative, a point of consensus that surprisingly attracts both contemporary regime loyalists and their would-be liberal opposition.
