Shunt: a mechanism which bypasses/diverts accumulations of fluid to an absorbing or excreting system. Though the shunt operation is the most common neurosurgical procedure performed, it has a high failure rate (one year averaged a 30% failure rate). A problem is the lack of understanding and lack of knowledge, by neurosurgeons, of basic fluid dynamics and internal workings of the shunts themselves. They simply use "what they were trained on" without the benefit of an objective guide to the best shunts and why they are superior to others. As the author states, their only other source of information comes from biased manufacturer's representatives. The Shunt Book fills a void in the literature by presenting basic information on types of shunts and their functions, thus allowing neurosurgeons to rationally select shunt equipment and understand their mechanical effects. This inexpensive and easily accessible handbook offers chapters on fluid dynamics, internal mechanisms of shunts, types of shunts available, alternative devices and how to measure shunt effectiveness. This volume discusses How shunts work, How shunts fail, Alternatives to shunts, and Measuring implanted shunt performance.

Safe Medical Devices For Children written by Institute of Medicine and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-20 with Medical categories.

Innovative medical devices have helped reduce the burden of illness and injury and improve the quality of life for countless children. Mechanical ventilators and other respiratory support devices rescue thousands of fragile newborns every year. Children who once would have died of congenital heart conditions survive with the aid of implanted pacemakers, mechanical heart valves, and devices that close holes in the heart. Responding to a Congressional request, the Institute of Medicine assesses the system for postmarket surveillance of medical devices used with children. The book specifically examines: The Food and Drug Administration's monitoring and use of adverse event reports The agency's monitoring of manufacturers' fulfillment of commitments for postmarket studies ordered at the time of a device's approval for marketing The adequacy of postmarket studies of implanted devices to evaluate the effects of children's active lifestyles and their growth and development on device performance Postmarket surveillance of medical devices used with children is a little investigated topic, in part because the market for most medical products is concentrated among older adults. Yet children differ from adults, and their special characteristics have implications for evaluation and monitoring of the short- and long-term safety and effectiveness of medical devices used with young patients.

During the past ten years, technology has been progressing at a rapid pace in the field of medical science, and there have been great improvements in the basic understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of hydrocephalus. The present volume contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on "Hydrocephalus" that was held in Kobe, Japan, from November 12-14, 1990. The purpose of the symposium was to highlight the recent advances in this field and to provide a unique opportunity for exchange of basic and clinical knowledge among experts in this field. During the symposium, 84 papers were presented by 240 contributors from 14 countries. This volume is a compre hensive description of the current knowledge in this area, and it may help to define what is known and to find new strategies to understand the patho genesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the hydrocephalic process. The editors take great pleasure in expressing their thanks to the contributors for their participation and cooperation, and to Springer Verlag for personal and technical assistance in publishing the proceedings. We sincerely hope that this volume will contribute to improving the treat ment for hydrocephalus. August 1991 The Editors V Contents Preface..........................................................
