George R. R. Martin's Wild Cards multi-author shared-world universe has been thrilling readers for over 25 years. Now, in addition to overseeing the ongoing publication of new Wild Cards books (like 2011's Fort Freak), Martin is also commissioning and editing new Wild Cards stories for publication on Tor.com. Daniel Abraham's "When We Were Heroes" is an affecting examination of celebrity, privacy, and the different ways people deal with notoriety and fame--problems not made easier when what you're famous for are superpowers that even you don't fully understand. Sergeant Major Devaney’s They Were Heroes presents moving portraits of warriors who have not been fully celebrated. His stories recognize the heroism of those who fought in these deadly conflicts and placed their lives at risk to assure the safety of their fellow Marines. For these Marines, no Medal of Honor is enough for their bravery. Nonetheless, though not his main purpose, Devaney calls attention to the practice of awarding medals itself, that often these warriors received awards that were below what their deeds merited. No less disturbing is the revelation that medals were often awarded by rank, and not always by action. The lives presented in Devaney’s book call attention to the fact that many heroes of these deadly conflicts have gone unrecognized.

Do they ever beat their lifelong nemesis, or do they continue to duke it out in the nursing home? These are questions We Were Heroes dares to explore! We Were Heroes is a collection all about super-powered individuals in their waning years. Retired crime-fighters with special talents and technology, crusading vigilantes who find their bodies failing, and old warriors passing the torch to the next generation; this anthology will show us what life is like for these people as they get old. Go beyond their heyday, and see what these legendary heroes will become.

The Second World War is famed for being the conflict that changed the face of warfare, and it is the last that changed the face of the world. In addition to remembering those who passed away in those dark days of war, a sincere debt of gratitude is owed to all those now in their twilight years who gave all that they had for King and Country. In this new and revised third edition, with additional material to celebrate the lives of D-Day and Arnhem veterans, Gary Bridson-Daley presents 46 of over 150 interviews he conducted with veterans over recent years, adding to the history books the words and the original poetry of those who fought and supported the war effort to ensure freedom, peace and prosperity for generations to come. From each corner of the British Isles and every armed service, from Dam Buster George 'Johnny' Johnson through to riveter Susan Jones: heroes, all.

None Of Them Were Heroes written by Chaim Rockman and has been published by Devora Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) categories.

Recounts the fate of descendants of the Oberman family from Leipzig, based on wartime family letters. Focuses on Adolf Rochman (1910-1964), who succeeded in reaching England in 1939, and his intermittent and unsuccessful efforts to obtain a visa for his mother, Lina Oberman Rochman (1885-1942), who was desperately trying to survive in Leipzig. Includes the tragic fate of Adolf's sister Berta Grusman and her daughter, who were killed in Cetata Alba, Romania, when the Nazis burned a group of Jews in a synagogue. Lina was reduced to penury, then taken with other Jews to the ruins of the Brody and Luebecker synagogues. About the time her British visa came through, she was forced onto a transport to Riga which she did not survive. British antisemitism is revealed when the interning of Jewish refugees from Nazism is associated with political pressure from British fascists like Moseley. Adolf, who changed his name to Peter, is criticized for not doing enough to try to save his mother. The letters are interspersed with newspaper reports on events of the time.
